Derek felt the annoying touch of sunlight dripping through the heavy curtains until he couldn’t take the pestering touch of light to his shut eyes anymore. He stretched his arms to either side of the bed with a loud groan, his neck was stiff, probably from craning all night to stare at the moon as insomnia held him with an iron grip. He knew he fell asleep somewhere in the early morning with Katherine’s warm figure pressed up against him, while he preferred to sleep when fatigue washed over him he was more than content at staring at the peaceful rise and fall of her chest and the restful expression lacing her beautiful features.
His brilliant azure gaze shifted to the empty space beside him and he felt the tug of worry and paranoia lacing his mind. They were relatively safe at the cabin but he was always fearful for her safety, he tugged a shirt over his head before venturing into the cold, finally dust free interior of the cabin. He saw the regular mess of red hair rolling over the armrest of the chair. Andi let up on her relentless sass for a few days but he expected she was getting ready to leave. He wasn’t even sure why she even stuck around but he found her digging through the files tucked under a loose floorboard a few nights back. He wasn’t aware of her manhunt to find the asshole always breathing down their necks or the millions stashed in one of the old man’s useless hiding spaces.
‘She sleeps like a fucking idiot’, he chuckled lightly seeing one leg draped over the end of the sofa and the other tucked strangely against the backrest. The light smile on his lips faltered as he stepped into the kitchen in hopes of finding Katherine digging through the snacks they slowly piled into the cabinets. When he didn’t see the beautiful figure of seductive hips and a perfect gaze greeting him he felt a faltering sense of confidence.
“Katherine?!”, he was yelling loud enough to draw her attention hopefully but he tried to keep Andi’s peaceful rest undisturbed. Derek balanced his shoulder against the door frame and glanced at the slightly ajar bathroom door, his brows scrunched together patiently waiting to hear her response calling him like the words of a siren to the ears of a love drunk sailor. He absolutely adored her for everything that made her unique, still, he was confident his witty remarks still won the regular, playful arguments.

I feel like giving up
It isn’t in my blood
Being up since the crack of dawn was not a strong suit of Katherine's. Her eyes were heavy as she looked to Derek's sleeping face. Seeing him so peaceful while he slept made her heart skip a beat. She was happy for the first time in a long while, and it was all thanks to this handsome hunk of a sass master. He hand slightly cupped his stubbly cheek. She couldn’t believe how much she loved this man. She was even liking his sister when she held off on the heavy sarcasm.
She leaned in and pecked his lips before feeling a cramping in her stomach. She could feel something trying to come back up from last night. Moving as lightly as possible she climbed over Derek and swallowed hard to keep down the bile. But it had other plans as she lurched forward and ran to the bathroom. She didn’t have time to close the door all the way as she opened the seat and all her dinner came up.
Tears streamed down her face as she vomited vehemently into the porcelain bowl of the toilet, hugging it like her last life line. Trying to catch her breath she flushed what was already there only to have her body lurch some more. ‘Fish for a second time does not taste good…… ‘ She thought. She didn’t realize how long she had been gone for. But as she continued expelling all of her nutrients one thought kept running through her head. One that she feared so much… ‘I’m pregnant.’
Sitting on her calves, her head resting on her forearm she began to cry harder. She couldn't do this to them. Not now, not when they just started their lives together. The panic and fear set in as she combed her fingers through her hair. She retched again, feeling the burning in her gut as most of it was now just stomach acid. Her abdomen hurt as it tried forcing more up through her esophagus.
Finally able to catch her breath she laid there against the cold toilet. Her body shook from the cold sweat on her body and the forceful vomiting she just went through. Flushing the toilet once more she laid there on the floor feeling her stomach calm. That's when she heard the walking in the hall and she groaned. She didn't want him waking up yet… Another pang went through her abdomen and she sat up straight.
Hearing him call out her name she was tempted to just slam the door. But then Andi would be up too. “Katherine isn't,” her body leaned over the toilet once more with more gusto, “isn't here right now… oh god…” She couldn't keep up the sarcasm as she began dry heaving a bit.
Hearing the door open wider she tried to keep her eyes averted to the back of the toilet. She couldn't look him in the eye, especially with her thoughts at the moment. “I’m okay. I promise…” Her voice was weak and hoarse from all the retching she'd done. Laying her forehead back on her arm she pulled her hair away from her face.
At the low melody of her voice drumming to life through the slightly ajar bathroom door he stepped closer. He didn’t go in at first, he only rested his shoulder against the wall as he listened to her poor attempt at sarcasm. He found himself laughing almost too loudly before setting his palm against the door and inching his way inside with a smirk resting on his chiseled features. Any other day his first quip would be about the thin layer of sweat coating her skin while she hugged the toilet for dear life but with her failed sarcasm hanging in the air he couldn’t help himself from teasing her for the pure fun of it.
“If that’s your voicemail we seriously have to work on your conversation skills”, he was somewhat glad they weren’t back in the bedroom in fear of having a pillow chucked at his already messy mop of hair. It was always fun watching her assault him for his persistent lack of thought before speaking, but then again, every memory tangled in her beautiful presence left an everlasting imprint on his mind that left a permanent ghost of a smile on his features.
He could hear the thin coat of weakness hanging off her voice, it left a deep sigh on his lips and a slight urgency in his steps. He rested on the edge of the tub and reached over to grasp the soft silk of her hair into his gruff palms before collecting the almost rebellious strands in a light hold behind her head. The last thing he wanted was for her to feel worse than the apparent toll of the vomiting on her slim figure.
“What’s going on Kat, it’s not last night’s Chinese is it”, most people underestimated his intelligence and credited all of his abilities to the size of his muscles. Still, he remembered the conversation a few weeks prior as clear as day, there was no mistaking the fear that lingered in the pit of his stomach or the worry lacing his thoughts. He hoped he was wrong and she’d whack him for the suggestion before blaming the Chinese for the horrible way her day started.
“Try to remember that you’re a horrible liar when it comes to me”, a playful tone laced his voice as he tried to hurl his worry to a deep abyss where it wouldn’t make her feel guilty or terrible for something that couldn’t change purely for the thought of it. Regardless of her response, he knew without a doubt that the road with her by his side was long from over. Derek didn’t care if he had to trek all the way through boiling magma to be with her, he’d do everything in his power to solidify their life together. The words that left her mouth only truly determined how fast he’d solve his problems with the raw brutality of his mutation. There was no way he’d introduce his own flesh and blood to a world where someone else had the ability to control their fate, besides, Katherine deserved more than spending her life with a man running from his demons.

I feel like giving up
It isn’t in my blood
Katherine wanted nothing more than to be happy in the moment. To declare any sort of baby news with joy and amazement. But right now it felt like a dark cloud over her head, pelting her with hail and lightning. She couldn’t bring herself to look at Derek as he joked and held her hair back. Even with all the sarcasm and jokes, he was still so kind and sweet. Someone who didn’t deserve to be held back because of a kid on the way. ‘I’m even more of a liability now…’ She thought.
She wanted to throw something at him. A pillow maybe, she didn’t wanna wreck that adorable chiseled face with the boyish grin. Honestly she wished she could vomit more and avoid this conversation altogether, but it seems her stomach was starting to feel better even as her abdomen ached. She knew he wasn’t an idiot. No matter how much she wanted to forget about his brains, he was too damn clever and attentive to her. Although that wasn’t something she’d ever seriously complain about.
Katherine hated being on the feels rollercoaster. She wanted it to just stop for a second so she could breath… so she could enjoy her time with Derek, alone. But now all she wanted was to disappear completely. Letting out a shaky breath she flushed the toilet one last time and just sat there. Things were getting too real, too quickly. She wiped at her face to keep the fresh tears from falling. She knew he’d see and she didn’t want to be seen as weak or pathetic in his eyes. She didn’t want to show cowardice in front of him. She had always tried to be so tough for all of her life. It’s what she had grown to come to terms with. But now with someone that made her feel so vulnerable, she couldn’t keep it together long enough for a smile or giggle.
“I’ve been thinking about it… and I think… the night we met. I was already in heat. I’m pretty sure…… I’m pretty sure I’m pregnant.” A silent ‘I’m sorry’ was left to be implied as she broke down in tears. She wanted to blame the Chinese food they ate, but this felt so much different from food poisoning. You didn’t feel even remotely better after vomiting your entire stomach into the toilet. It just didn’t happen that way. At least not from her mom’s stories about it. One of those rare moments of mother and daughter actually getting along and learning about each other that she had wished she had more of in her life. She had wanted that mother, and she feared she wouldn’t be able to bring that to the child inside of her. Everything in her body told her to bolt out the door and climb the tallest tree. But the light touch of Derek holding her hair kept her frozen to her spot. “I should’ve paid more attention…”
Derek knew his face shifted into a happy grin despite the worry flooding his system and the numbness settling into his legs. He never thought about having a kid but the thought of sharing the special occasion with Katherine gave him more confidence than he thought possible. A low rumble of thunder echoed across the sky but it didn’t feel heavy and ominous like it did when his anger fueled the lightning pumping through him. he had to will himself to meet her gaze, he’d gotten so lost in his own thoughts that he nearly forgot that the moment between them was concrete, real and still followed the rules of time.
“You know”, he shifted his weight before sinking to his knees by the side of the toilet and met her gaze with a confident grin etched on his features. “Before I met you I wasn’t a strong believer in fate but you were the perfect example to change my mind. Pretty sure you still owe me a new shirt since you bled all over mine”, a soft chuckle left his lips as he reached out and set a palm on hers, “I’m sure we’ll get through this, we’ll make it work”.
Derek felt the slight tug of his jaw clenching as a new thought raged his mind, he couldn’t risk raising a child with dirty assholes breathing down his neck. While he didn’t want to risk anyone he cared about he knew in time he’d utilize his sister’s unique talents in combination with his own and he’d burn every one of those dumb bastards to ash. No one would lay a hand on Katherine or their child.
“We uh, we should get you a few things from the store. I’m not sure what we need, maybe some vitamins”, his tone was doused in humor as he leaned forward and pressed a tender kiss to her forehead. Derek knew he’d do everything in his power to keep her safe, even if it means facing his father’s demons and eradicating the sins he didn’t commit for a family the old bastard would never meet.
“Whatever happens, we’re in this together. I’m not going anywhere”, there was a deep determination dancing in his gaze as he engraved every inch of her beautiful features into his mind. One of his palms automatically reached out to touch the her stomach, even if there wasn’t anything visible brewing just yet. He enjoyed the warmth of her skin and the potential of a new life from their love gently caressing his fingers.

It isn’t in my blood
Watching as he sat down next to her, she looked at his face and her eyes widened with surprise. She had expected to see worry, maybe some conflicting emotions. Nope, he was all smiles as he spoke with charm and humor. A chuckle of her own mixed with the tears as she tried wiping most of them away. “It was one shirt, you can get over it.” She joked. “I want this to work...more than anything.” She whispered and scooted closer.
Nuzzling her head under his chin she began to purr and curled up on his lap. A smile broke through the little frown she had held at his suggestion and kiss to her forehead. “I’m gonna need to get some prenatals for sure… and I should probably call my personal doctor.” She hadn’t seen him in a while. Then again he wasn’t the type of guy to be called for little things like a cold or constant pain. He was more on the down low and helped Mutants rather than normal humans.
Feeling his hand on her stomach as he looked her in the eyes… it was one of the most magical moments she’s ever felt thus far. Her hand held his on her stomach as she laid her head on his shoulder. She felt so content and happy right in this moment. Leaning up she kissed his neck with a coy smile. “Good, because if you think all I’d do is throw pillows as you ran you’re damn wrong. May have to chain you to the bed for good measure.” She teased and nipped his neck right where she kissed.
“It was my favorite shirt”, he argued with a happy smile. Her words left him trapped in a euphoria worth more than the worry in his gut, he’d fix everything and he’d do it soon. He wouldn’t let the woman he loves worry about their child in a world with assholes out to get him, somehow he’d burn them all to shit and retake control over his life. He knew without a single ounce of doubt he’d beat the living shit out of his father if the man didn’t die that night. He couldn’t described just how much the purring intrigued him and as much as he’d love to give her the normal playful banter about it he chose to keep it to himself instead.
He wasn’t ever one for drugs but he was pretty confident the feeling he got at seeing her smile was a close second to the chemical induced high other people craved. Derek didn’t even know what prenatals entailed but he’d get her the very best that he could, he just wanted her to be healthy and safe. For a second he wondered if their child would purr as well, partly because he’d sass the hell out of Katherine if that particular gene shifted to the beautiful life growing inside her stomach.
“And you trust him, your doctor? G.A.D.E.M has taken more mutants every day, spoke to a buddy of mine down in Michigan the other day, I don’t want you on their radar”, he had about two entire encounters with GADEM, he only barely escaped the second time but h managed to elude them fairly easy by not drawing too much attention to himself.
“Oh, is that a promise”, Derek stood to his feet, held out his palms to pull her to hers before pulling her to his chest with a gentle tug. He was halfway through trailing kisses down her neck when he stopped with a shocked look etched on his features, “Shit, can we even get into it with the uh, pregnancy?”, he looked worriedly to her slender figure as if she’d break with a single touch. He didn’t know how these things worked, he was hardly old enough to remember when his mother was pregnant with Andi.

Katherine could only giggle as he argued over the shirt. Rolling her eyes she didn’t want to move from her spot as she continued purring. She didn’t even deny that he was the cause of it anymore. She tried that one time and he threatened to spend the night on the couch… fucking jerk. He had known she was all cuddles. She wondered if it would be one of the things that passed along with their baby. She’d be getting hell for it, she could just sense it.
“He’s the only other person I trust with my life besides you. We can take a ride to his place. It might not actually be too far from here.” She said and smiled as Derek got up. She remembered when her powers first manifested. He was there to help bandage up the poor fool that had made her go feral in the first place. Doctor Monroe was a nice man with the ability to alter reality as others saw it. But he only did it to memories as to not upset the balance to the world.
Taking his hand she willing raised to be pulled into his chest again. She tilted her head to the side to give him better access. But her purring turned to an annoyed growl as he pulled away. Rolling her eyes again she frowned. She didn't even know the answer to that. “Well, I mean… I'm sure it would be okay. But we can double check with Doctor Monroe.” Giving his lips a light peck she smiled and took hold of Derek's hand to head back to the bedroom. They'd have to get dressed, and Katherine's thoughts where turning as she thought of the reaction she'd get from her friend and doctor. He'd probably harass Derek so much. “He can point us in the right direction of everything we’ll need.”
Derek leaned his forehead gently against hers, he enjoyed the warmth of her skin and the close proximity of her heart beat to his. The light thud of the pumping organ against her chest couldn’t begin to compare against the rapid beating of his own, she was by far the only person who had the adept ability to make him feel weak for the best of reasons. He wasn’t sure if he trusted the doctor but he put faith in her, he’d at least give the man the benefit of the doubt. Besides, there weren’t man other choices available to them. Derek feared if they took the pregnancy to a doctor who wasn’t familiar with Katherine and her unique mutation they’d notice something off about the child’s genetics and their flesh and blood would end up at the core of a government experiment. By the reports he knew GADEM had slowly gotten more cocky and upfront about their motives and he’d do goddamn everything to keep the ones he loved from their clutches.
“well since we can’t exactly, uh, have some fun”, he chuckled lightly pulling her body closer to his chest for a second before stepping back a few feet “we might as well get on the road then. After we get dressed”. Derek leaned against the doorway and glanced at her for a single second, “you know. This might be the last time I get to see you naked before you get all puffy”, he winked at her with a playful demeanor settling over his gaze before darting into the bedroom. Derek kept his footfalls gentle and soft in hopes of keeping the slumbering ball of wit and mischief ever asleep on the worn fabric of the couch.
Derek felt the additional presence in the air and he smirked to himself knowing it had to be Katherine. He shrugged his shoulders putting on a clean t-shirt over his skin with the last pair of clean jeans tucked onto the one seater tucked into the corner of the room. He looked into the reflection of the mirror to see that even reflective surfaces did nothing to dull her otherworldly beauty that had him about as captivated as a sailor called by the songs of a siren.
He ran his fingers through his hair, the golden strands resembling his father were growing unruly and longer, he knew he’d have to cut it sometime. Derek even considered shaving the stubble lining his jaw again but he didn’t have the energy. Derek turned to glance at Katherine with a gaze dipped in love and lust with the best of both dancing in an awfully beautiful balance.
Derek leaned his back against the wall with a patient sigh, “how did I get so lucky?”, the words drifting out of his lips were quiet and barely audible. He thought she deserved better, something more normal than the shit he was associated with but he also knew he’d do everything within his capabilities to give her whatever she needed, whatever she wanted.
“I’m thinking, how would I know if it’s you purring or the little one?”, a teasing smirk grew onto his lips at the thought. His arm reached out to grasp the bike keys into his curled fingers and tucked them into his pocket for the time being.

“You sound like a virgin talking like that. What daddy can’t play?” Katherine quipped and smirked. But hearing his comment about getting puffy her eyes could’ve cut him down the middle. She knew she’d get bigger in her belly. It’s the natural order of thing because of how small she was. Hell, she possibly could show a lot sooner than five months along. Being part cat was both a blessing and a curse.
Her cheeks puffed out as she glared at Derek’s little joke of getting puffy. “You can be such a jerk sometimes.” She scoffed, “Hey, get back here you!” She angrily whispered as he escaped through the door. She did her best to keep on her tiptoes as she chased after him. She looked in the room her arms crossed as she gave her best pout. But she couldn’t help but to melt at the sign of that smirk on his lips. Those brilliant playful blue eyes dancing with love matching her own.
“God, I can’t even stay mad at you. You’re too damn handsome.” She eventually smiled and picked up a pillow tossing it at the back of his head. She giggled as she decided to put on something a little less revealing. Just a graphic tee and some capri’s and her boots. She watched him as he ran his fingers through his hair, then to the stubble on his cheeks. “You know, I really like the stubble. Take some from the top and you’d look even more perfect.”
She wondered what he was thinking though she heard his little question. She gave a knowing smile, “Oh, a little of this, a little of that and saved the love of your life’s life. That’s kinda important.” She shrugged. But what he said next got her to thinking. “Haha, very funny. I didn’t start purring until I was ten. First thing I did was accidentally sliced open a kids chest for picking on me. Fucking Debbie…” She pulled up her hand and let her claws out. She hated remembering it, but it was part of her life.
Derek still found more joy in their back and forth playful arguments than he did in most aspects of life, he couldn’t help but turn to feign mock hurt with his palm set over his chest in a dramatic gesture. The pillow rolled over the back of his head and tumbled down the front of his shoulder until it soundlessly embraced the tug of gravity and rested gently on the floor by his feet. Derek took a few bold steps towards Katherine, pulled her closer with a swift tug around her waist and looked down at her with a smug smirk etched over his features.
“Anything you want, I’m more than willing to give”, he’d cut the long strands of hair for her, hell, he’d race through hell and back if that’s what she really wanted. Derek only wanted to see her smile, maybe a quick roll of her eyes and a glare here and there but he prided himself on his ability to get on her nerves with playful quips while he simultaneously adored her inability to stay mad at him. Maybe when the hormones kicked in with full force he’d feel the real embrace of her wrath but he was almost sure he could outrun her if she donned a pregnant belly.
Stepping back he couldn’t help but laugh at her accurate answer, he looked at her with a playful grin and a quick wink. “Also kinda important to remember that you pretty much seduced me from the start, somewhere right after you ruined my favorite shirt”, there was still an candid look dancing in his gaze, he was honestly goddamn happy he came across her even if it all started with a stranger hunched over in an alley while rain poured down on them.
“I bet we end up with a little Thor on our hands”, he joked lovingly although his nerves were wrecked. He still wasn’t sure he could even be a father but he opted to look on the bright side instead, drowning himself in self-doubt and terrifying thoughts of what ifs wasn’t going to do either of them any good. At least he knew Debbie wasn’t a name on the table if they ended up having a daughter, it didn’t bother him, he knew a Debbie once and she was a bitch. All he knew for sure was that he’d brave the future for her, with her and without a second doubt for the little life blooming inside of her.

Katherine’s smile turned to a smirk as she rolled her eyes at another mention of his shirt. “Oh by I’m just an innocent girl. How did I seduce the big strong man?” She smiled and tapped the tip of his nose with her finger playfully. Hearing he hoped that their baby had his powers she giggled some. “I will bet you two hundred that it’s a little girl with your personality, but she has my powers. Kitty gonna need claws to match mommy and daddy’s wit.”
Her stomach growled in that moment and she blushed some. “Let’s get some breakfast first. I’m starving… and don’t you dare make a joke about me just losing my dinner to make room for it.” She cut him a glare to challenge it. She may just have to take that pillow with them to smack him over the head if he did. Then again Doctor Monroe had plenty at his place. He could just replace them.
“Oh God… another you running around… I’d lose my fucking mind.” She joked. Honestly she’d be able to handle it. She was starting to get a little used to the idea of taking care of a small child, but she was still scared shitless. Her smile dimmed as she thought about the example she had throughout her life. Her nanny was better than her mom, and that’s what made it even more scary.
If a stranger can come in and take better care of your child, why have one at all? She hoped that she didn’t have to call anyone else for help other than Derek. That’s the one thing her mother never had, never stuck with. She did well Katherine guessed until she could afford the nanny. Then her job had taken up all of her time. The deeper these thoughts got the more pensive her face became with a frown and furrowed brow. Her hold on Derek got just a little tighter.
Derek found himself grinning as beautiful memories of their time flooded his mind in an eternal euphoria, “I’m pretty sure you purred, that was my downfall”. He chuckled softly at the recollection of that fateful night that drove them into each other’s arms, no conflicted worries or arguments, just a night spent basking in each other’s embrace in the onslaught of the wind as they left the mess behind. He glared at her though, he was somewhat excited to see his own genetic variability at work but he wouldn’t mind two little purring machines, that was just a recipe for the kind of disaster he’d grown to love even if he suspected Katherine might kill him before he doused their child in the same witty quips.
He held his palms over his heart with an expression of mock hurt, “I was just gonna say you’re probably starving, I guess you’re gonna be a little extra touchy from now on”. His lips curled into a smug smirk, he was almost inviting a retaliation but he couldn’t argue her request though, he was absolutely starving. Eating wasn’t easy when there wasn’t much close by.
Derek saw the shift of her features, he reached down to cup her cheek with his palm and caressed her lips with his own for a quick, tender kiss. “You’ll be great at this sweetheart, I promise. We’ll make this work”, he smiled with honest intent even though his subconscious already mulled over the dark ideas of burning the chains of his past that kept him trapped in an endless loop. He didn’t tell Katherine, he also wouldn’t soon but he planned to burn the bastards that chased him all over the fucking country to the ground until they weren’t much more than ashes blowing away in the aftermath of his assault. He knew it then and he knew it wat etched in his mind for an eternity, Katherine was the only thing that mattered along with the beautiful life growing inside her, the result of their love and he’d go to through hell and back to protect them.

It isn’t in my blood
Giving a smile she kissed back until Derek pulled away. A small pout made her lower lip jut out some as he spoke. She didn’t like looking so predictable in her expressions, but she was happy to hear those words again. It was a great reassurance as a soft smile took over her lips. Pulling back she kissed his cheek and held his hand as she walked out of the bedroom. Making sure Andi was still asleep she quietly tiptoed over to the back door.
Once Derek had the door closed she hopped onto the back of the bike and smiled. She wondered if sometime she could get him to bend her over this baby for a bit of fun. Her face flushed with the dirty little fantasy. Once the bike was on she held tight being careful to not keep her hands too far down, but she couldn’t resist teasing the idea of it.
Her hands drifted under the soft fabric of his shirt as Katherine smirked. She worked her fingers over the hard muscles of his abs and held on tighter. “How about Merry Ann’s again?”
Derek felt awfully cautious on the ride over, he knew Katherine was tough as nails but he was so afraid she’d break and shatter at the lightest touch. He could remember the way to Merry Ann’s like the back of his hand, partially because he remembered every second they spent together with vivid detail. Derek wasn’t sure how to classify the constant haunting thoughts of her in his mind before they left town together but he knew it now, she had him tripping over his own two feet on a feeling he didn’t know in years. He goddamn loved her, without a doubt and without a single second’s regret.
Sliding his legs off the cold embrace of the bike he turned to her with a sly grin, “We’re gonna crash one day”, tucking his shirt back down he glared at her with playful intent, “and it won’t be my fault”. He chuckled lightly before he even suggested his final idea, “next time; you drive. I won’t do much, promise”, the defiance and playful conviction played in his gaze as much as love, adoration and absolute infatuation.
He held the door open for her, waving at the slightly familiar faces of the people he saw that fateful morning he dived deeper into who she was. Derek allowed Katherine to walk in front, he was surprised how honest and true this one girl made him. It gave him all the more motivation to rid them of the obstacles that deprived them of a life worth of the comfort she deserved. He’d fix that, in time he would.
Sitting down he looked up to the kind waitress bringing over menus and a beaming smile, “black coffee for me”, he waited patiently for Katherine to raise her order while slowly drawing figures into the glossy top of the table. Derek waited until the waitress was out of earshot when he probed at a more tender conversation he suspected would end up badly either way.
“I know your mom’s a raging bitch and all but if you want to share the news or anything, I’ll be right there with you sweetheart”, he’d support her through hell and back but he had to give her the option to share something most women dreamed of sharing with their mothers. Still, if she decided against it he’d support her in the defiance as well.
