Marty didn't know what to think. He was still swimming in a sea of his own confusion. It wasn't like Clara was coming right out and saying hey! I'm a murdering psycopath. And truthfully. Marty was beating around the bush himself. He didn't want to ask the hard hitting questions. The ones that might break his heart.
Instead he asked if she was okay and if she had seen Joey. He already knew that in his heart Joey was dead. He didn't know for sure, but something just told him that Joey was gone. He didn't know that his brother as a mutant with the rare gift of regeneration. Joey was a healing mutant and the bullet that killed him.....Had really killed him. Only he came back to life as his tissue pushed the bullet out and healed on it's own.
Marty was unaware that his brother was a mutant. Wasn't even complete sure that his brother had been shot, but he knew that his chances were slim. Splashdown sat in the driver's seat as Marty sat behind him, turned slightly to face Clara who sat in the backseat of the open aired jeep. The jeep had no roof only black bars and a metal frame. As Marty turned he stared at Clara.
There were tears in his eyes and a million questions dancing in his gaze that he didn't have the heart or the balls to ask. Who were those men? Why were they hunting you? Why did they taken me and worsely....Why don't I know you the way i thought i did? Marty wished things could go back to the way they were before. He sat there solumnly and emotional as the Jeep came to a stop.
"Welcome to Burger Baby With the world's greatest Burger's baby can i take your order?" Marty looked over and they were sitting in a drive through. "Uh....Yeeeeeah.... Can i Get 7 Burning Baby Gut busters. 2 Toilet terrorists and a Medium Sprite?" "Will that complete your order?" Jesse was still wearing his mask, only his voice was still robotic and weird.
He turned to Marty and Clara...."You guys want anything?" He asked waiting to see if they did or not..."NO! WE DON'T WANT ANYTHING! YOU WEIRDO! WE'RE TRYING TO HAVE A CONVERSATION HERE!" Marty just snapped and lost it on the guy.... There was a moment of complete silence. "$29.50 is your total please drive around." Even the lady inside sounded uncomfortable. Splashdown looked at Marty. "I could have got you a fry or something." He said pulling around the building and shaking his head.

Clara felt her eyes dive to the ground with a heavy sigh, she didn’t have the heart to tell him Marty was dead and it broke her into pieces just thinking of it. Her lips pursed together almost painfully, suddenly the thudding crams in her aching muscles were nonexistent and the continuous pain wrecking the busted skin over her nose became dull enough to ignore. “Joey, he got shot Marty. I tried to stop them, I wasn’t fast enough”, and she’d spend the next few weeks building her stamina and cardio abilities to be stronger, faster and better so she could fight any similar instances should they rise in her future.
She didn’t want to tell him she was okay, Clara honestly didn’t want to lie anymore and saying she was fine would be an absurd insult to the truth. Nothing about her was fine, she was hurting but strong enough to bite through it, worried but focused enough to force a mask of confidence and utterly terrified Marty would hate her but painstakingly more worried about his safety than their future.
Clara wasn’t an idiot, she saw every questioning syllable in his gaze and she felt the heavy weight of every answer anchoring into her shoulders. She forced a confident façade over her features, trying to brave the nauseating feeling of confessing the truth to Marty but it was almost impossible. “I’ll answer anything Marty, you deserve the truth and I’m sorry I haven’t been honest with you”, the voice at the drive through drowned out her voice and she felt the undeniable urge to utter the words that hung on the edge of her mind and tore at her sanity. “I’m a monster”, she repeated the words more times in her mind than she with her voice, Marty was hurt and in pain and it was all her fault.
Clara was starving, she kind of wanted to say yes but instead she shoved the words back down her throat at Marty’s outburst. Following the loud silence she spared Jesse an apologetic glance, he did more for her than most people she knew and the fact that they got Marty back alive and mostly well was a favor she could never truly repay. Jesse didn’t know how much he’d done for her, he didn’t know that saving Marty drove her from the verge of insanity and blind rage.
“Marty”, Clara reached out but withdrew her fingers seeing the dark tint of crimson staining her skin, she didn’t want Marty to reject her touch so she didn’t set herself up for that absolutely terrifying pain. “I need you to understand that I’m still me, there are things I didn’t tell you to protect you but I’m still the same person. I won’t lie to you again, I promise”, the words spilled from her lips like a running liver of honesty and absolute care for the man next to her.
“Splashdown helped me, if it wasn’t for him they would have killed us both. I never meant to leave you with them”, she spared a respectful nod to Splashdown, a somewhat reassurance that she’d keep up her end of the deal . he helped her save Marty and she’d do more than save the mutants in that facility, she’d bring the whole fucking place to the ground. If she had time she’d give Felix a little bit of his own damn medicine too. Clara struggled to rearrange her gaze on Marty, she feared what honest thoughts she’d see reflecting in his confused eyes.
