Swooping over her he picked her up. She felt like she weighed next to nothing. The beast that attacked her did more than that. He had sucked away some of her good soul. Parasites. That's what they were. Everything in this place was a parasite looking to feed on kind nature. Lucky for the Fools they didn't have much of that. They were assholes and criminals. Basically scum.
Some of them had their moments to shine, but when it came to it most of the time they did the wrong thing. The bad thing. It was just who they were. It took Lara to open Shawn's eyes. He had goodness radiating in him deep within, but it took her light, her beauty to unlock it for him. Without her he would have been the same cynical asshole quietly pounding drinks at the back of the bar with nothing to care about.
No reason to get out of bed besides his own muddy self interests. There was a time when he would have killed for that. To continue to be the lone wolf that didn't give a damn about anything. He would have ran screaming from any form of commitment and never looked back, but he wasn't that guy anymore. He was wiser. Kinder. Less hardened around the edges, though he was still a fool.
That me and mine first mentality had been so ingrained in his fucking DNA that it was hard to step back into the light. Well, mostly it was hard. She made it easy. Though they had only been together a short time he realized how hollow his fragmented life had become. How meaningless and shallow his petty dealings were without someone to make the trouble for. She was trouble alright and he fucking loved it. Scooping her up he frowned. It bothered him that she felt like a feather in his arms. He could see her clearly.
He could see the ravaged abused skin and the torn bloody clothes. It was quietly breaking his heart. Shawn carried her through the darkness and saw the trees all around them. They were still in the forest. The ground rumbled all around them. Something big moved closer. The fog skirted around his untied boots and Shawn stepped through it bravely not fearing a fucking thing in this world. He held his girl close. Kept her safe in his arms. Nothing was going to pry her away from him again he was going to fucking bank on that.
Moving through the dark forest Shawn got an eerie sense of the familiar. It was familiar and different all at the same time. He could hear sounds all around him as he moved through the forest. The weight in his arms got heavier as Lara went limp in his arms.... Passed out from the shock and the trauma of what had happened. She gave him courage. She gave him strength as he pushed onward into the clearing.
Up ahead of him was a large two story house. It was baked in shadow and dark matter that looked hot to the touch. It whipped around the house like black flames daring him to enter. He was brave. He marched forward through the shadows that acted as a barrier. "TURN BACK SHINY HERO! DOOOOOOO.... NOT ENTER THIS PLACE!" The voice groaned from behind him. He flexed his muscles in his back tightly and thought of his first kiss with Lara. That pure image instilled in his mind shot out another blinding white light that covered the wasteland of darkness in his warm glow. She was his beacon in the darkness as much as he was her light in this dark place.
Shawn stepped over the barrier into the front lawn of his childhood home. He recognized it instantly and walked up the porches steps with an unconscious woman in his arms. Moving up to the door he pushed it open. It swung open with a low harmonious creek. Stepping to the entry way his heart broke. He heard a child's laughter. His laughter echoing through the fog like a remnant of a memory long forgotten. Thudding footsteps running up the basement stairs and low and behold in front of him the basement door flung open smacking the wall behind it with a massive THUD!
Shawn watched this his glowing white eyes and burning white hair as a shadowy indistinct shape, a child's shapes and more than likely his own shadow; ran through the living room. "I'M GOING TO GET YOU!" A boy's voice called out gleefully. He couldn't remember who he was chasing, but he got that same pulling sense of the familiar. Off to the right the kitchen stood before him. He could hear humming from inside.
He stepped in further to see another shadow standing at the kitchen counter with a rolling pin on some thin pie crust. His mother. Looking back he couldn't remember her face. It seemed like another lifetime. He didn't remember his mother well, but here in this place.... In the dark dimension.... This rolling land of shadows and sick energy he remembered everything with a sheen of foggy haze. Things came back to him that he had no earthly right to remember.... "TUUUURN BACK!" "leave this place....." "YOU'RE MAKING A MISTAKE!" The vipers whispered in his ear. Shawn's face never changed from the confident impressive stone look of a man dead set on saving his girlfriend. In front of him he looked down to see his boyhood shadow standing in front of him. It looked up at him... Wreathed in black shadow and having no describable features.
"Come on!" The boy cried happily and started running upstairs. Shawn followed without a word. Carrying Lara with him through the house he once grew up in. Moving up the stairs they creaked and groaned under their weight. More than once he thought he was going to fall through the rotten stairs. Black shadows licked at the walls and they looked almost as if they were going to reach out and grab them. The air in here was poisonous. Not because this was an unhappy place, but because it was the only happy place in existance here.
At least for the moment. Shawn had the power to rearrange the geography here and make it anything he wished. It was his own mind after all.... They were literally stuck inside his head... The dark dimension was nothing more than the place that harbored his darkest thoughts, and this happy home should not exist here. Shawn followed the boy to the top of the stairs, but he knew where he was taking him.... To his bedroom.
Pushing open the door he watched the shadow disappear inside a blanket fort. There was a sign on the front that said 'NO GIRLS ALLOWED. (EXCEPT MOMS IF THEY HAVE COOKIES) He smiled at this. He was once a good kid. Where did his life go so fucking wrong? Moving across the hall he entered the room and was hit with a wave of nostalgia so deep that he stumbled back a bit. He saw the shape of his bed, his desk...
The shape on the table of his iguana cage and his skateboard leaning against the wall. It made him think of how he wanted to have kids some day and another pulsing white light shot out from his back. He heard a groan in his arms and looked down to see Lara looking up at him. He leaned down slightly and kissed her on her forehead. Her head was covered in a light layer of sweat. "You can get out through here!!!" The boy cried peaking his head out from the fort.
"We're going home babe." Shawn said quietly. His white intense eyes glowing like luminous beacons of hope in an otherwise dark world. His boots thudded against the hardwood and softened as he stepped onto the plush carpet. Crouching down he pushed the blanket aside and was hit by a blinding white light. It was daylight. He could see the outside world. He stepped through and they were out of the dark dimension.
Standing on the sidewalk Shawn noticed first the chirping of birds. The sounds of cars passing by on the highway and the smell of malboro cigarettes. He looked over and saw a homeless man smoking a red. The man stumbled back. "Jesus almighty! WHERE THE FUCK YOU COME FROM MAN!?" The dirty homeless man fell in a pile of trash and scrambled to his feet. He ran off down the street screaming and hollering but Shawn didn't care. They were out! They made it back. Shawn looked down to see Lara still staring at him. Two black trails of dark energy bleeding form his nose, but there was a smile on his lips. He took a deep breathe. His hair was once again shiny silver. He was the shiny hero today. His eyes were back to their normal brown. There were no vipers hissing in his ears. It was just the sweet smell of Detroit.

Lara felt a sense of relief at the touch of his arms wrapped around her, the heavy anchors binding her feet to the foggy ground dissipated and the terrifying weight on her shoulders slumped into nonexistence. Her breathing steadied and every exhale was a second farther from the terrifying darkness around them, her pulse was slowly beating against her blood vessels with enough force to remind her she was alive even if she was starting to believe otherwise in the light of these uniquely eerie monsters.
Lara felt the heavy pounding against her skull die down in a light buzz that made her feel more tired than it tainted her mind in pain. She didn’t understand why Shawn made the voices stop or dulled the pain but it left her intoxicated by his presence, besides, even in an abyss of rotting darkness he bore a sense of hope that warmed up the cold touch to her limbs. She adored every second in his presence, whether it was spent watching poor soulless corpses dig into entrails or clutched in the throngs of passion.
Her palms reached out to clutch onto his shirt, a subconscious instinct that begged him to stay by her side. Lara didn’t fear the dark as much as she did losing him, especially when she was powerless to help him, to find him in an abyss haunted by demons she didn’t understand. Slowly she felt the heavy tug of her eyelids as she welcomed a brief reunion with sleep, if only to ignore the pain shooting through her nerves with every step.
Her mind travelled into a dream like landscape and she recalled the face of the very first ghost she tried to understand. After countless mauled visages haunting her childhood innocence she finally mustered up the courage to follow the soft giggle of a little boy in their pretty, quint home. That night she spent talking about his memories in the soft glow of a lantern in the attic was the first night she truly overcame her fear for the spirits. While she didn’t always appreciate their intrusive persistence she’d grown to accept the burden of seeing the dead. the memory left the taste of a smile on her lips, if she could overcome the fear of dead people begging her aid then she could make it through the abyss with Shawn, at least long enough to indulge in life’s pleasures one more time before she’d dare recall any measure of fearful tugs in her mind.
Slowly her mind tugged her back to the familiar feeling of consciousness and she glanced up at the beauty of his beaming light, their surroundings were vague to her but she could make out the obvious intricacies of a blanket fort in the confines of a bedroom. Her lips curled into a curious grin seeing the sign prohibiting entrance to girls, it was almost too cute. The warmth of his lips against her forehead radiated through her skin and left her pale, cold skin burning with a happiness that felt foreign in a place cluttered with darkness and eerie whispers.
“Took you long enough”, her tone was a unique sense of playful teasing as she glanced up at him, she knew somehow he’d get them out of here and her faith in his abilities weren’t misplaced. Lara owed him her life, an act of kindness she appreciated beyond the dull concepts of words strung together. The world, the real concrete world they escaped from welcomed her sight with a blinding light. The touch of sunlight dancing off her skin was welcoming and oddly comforting. A genuine laugh slipped through her lips as the reality of being out of that dark place drove her into an ecstasy of relief she wasn’t entirely sure how to express.
Her bright blue eyes littered with specs of lavender trailed the homeless man’s staggering exit and confusion with a grin, poor guy must have been shitting his pants at the sight of a couple stepping through the doorway into this world as if it was just another Monday. She felt kind of bad for the contamination of the strangeness of the extraordinary to his sanity, either way, too late to erase that awful memory for the poor guy.
A new light danced in her gaze, something clouded in joy, hope and relief but it washed away in brief worry for the trail of dark energy oozing from his nose. “You need a shower”, she laughed softly, coughing at a quick tug of pain at the rapid rise and fall of her chest but she ignored the brief touch of discomfort and wiped the back of her hand over the skin stained by the dark energy. Lara eased herself out of his embrace and found painful balance on her own two feet with one arm holding onto the warmth of his shoulder, “can’t have you carrying me around everywhere”, her lips twitched into a charming smile as she reached up to meet his lips in a passionate caress. “What now? Shower obviously but the last time we were here something didn’t smell right”, her eyes clouded in slight concern as she glanced at the concrete reality around them.

Running his tattooed fingers through locks of silver hair Shawn sighed. They had been through an ordeal. In this life and in the next realm they were attacked and battered. They barely escaped with their lives. Everything seemed to be out to get them today. His mind was touched with the devilishly present sense of paranoia. Looking around he saw that they were somewhere in the dead part of Detroit. The buildings around them were crumbling and falling apart. The sky even breathed a taste of poisonous fume. Smog from the few running factories around this area covered the sky in black blankets of depression and despair.
"I think we should lie low for a few days while we figure shit out." He stated the obvious, but then again... Nothing was obvious to him anymore. His entire world was turned upside down and he realized the power which resided in his leather bound frame. Shawn's eyes narrowed at the sight of a slowly passing car. He pushed Lara behind him and guarded her with his own body. Protectively wanting to come between her and anything else that might try to kill them today. He watched as the car slowly rounded a corner and disappeared. He breathed easier, though his nerves were still jumping, dancing livewires spinning on pins and needles.
He turned back to Lara. His hand reached up and wiped at some smudge of dirt on her cheek. They were both filthy. Her clothes were still tattered and torn. Blood staining the pale skin of her chest and abdomen as the effects of traversal to the dark lands left them victims of circumstance. Shawn was wearing a silver tank top under his leather jacket. His jeans were ripped and torn much like her clothes. Dark matter smudges stained his skin as well. A dark hand print rested on his knee. Something from the dark had reached out and touched him. You could see the outline of it's slender clawed fingers. They looked like they rolled around in an oil spil. Taking her hand he pulled her along behind him. He was careful to make sure she was well enoug to walk before he quickened up the pace of his stride.
He couldn't take her to the clubhouse. He didn't feel safe in his apartment. Instead he crossed the street in the decayed city. The sound of absolutely nothing following them loudly as if they were still in the shadow realm. There was no life here. Not much of it anyways. This was the section of Detroit that had been abandoned. Trees and wild vines grew over the buildings as mother nature tried to reclaim what man had so arrogantly stolen from her. Shawn's eyes were dancing like mad. They moved over the horizon scanning for threats. It'd be a good deal later before he felt safe again. Before he could breath easy and know that Lara was in no danger.
Shawn got an unexpected swelling of pride from being her great protector. He found purpose in it. Reason. He found that he wasn't just some scumbag criminal with no moral, but he had reason to be needed. It felt good. It felt better than he had felt in a long time, and that's what worried him. That he could find such pleasure in all the suffering she had seen today. It was just another example of his great selfishness, but he wanted to be better than that.
He pulled her across the street and over to what seemed like a vacant hotel. He peered into the front desk and saw that no one was inside. Some of the rooms had been boarded up and there was a notice on the front door that said condemned. Even in it's hayday this place was a cesspool for lowlifes and thugs. Only fitting that they should find shelter in it now. At least no one knew to look for them here. They could find peace. They could solice.
Shawn pulled her along behind him and kicked open a door. Room 206. I was on the second floor landing. He wanted an elevated room so he could better see trouble brewing should they need to make a break for it. The room was nothing fancy. It was dusty and the acrid smell of mold and rott lingered in his nose. It smelled better than the dark lands. That place was a festering putrid shithole.
It really said something about the workings of his inner mind. Shawn moved across the room and saw that the light's still worked. He didn't pay attention to the evicition notice but it must've been recent. Peeling off his jacket he realized there was a tear through the back. The leather ripped like paper and a long cut traveled across his back. Several in fact. It looked like something rabid attacked him and tried to pull his back apart and reach inside. His silver shirt stained with thick pools of blood.
Shadow sat on the bed. He reached a hand down to gently lower himself onto it. His eyes were dancing again, but this time over the soft caring features of the girl he had come to love. He paused to really thing about it. He loved her. With everything that he had he really and honstly truly loved Lara. Through all of this world, through every inch of the sunk place and every memory twisted and dark in the dark lands there was no better, brighter light in his life. He wrapped his hands around her waists softly.
His hands coming to rest on her hips as he pulled her closer. He rested his head on her stomach for a moment and kissed the soft bloody spot where her shirt was torn. "Let me see." He said softly pulling her shirt up and over her head. Her hair flopped down around her shoulders. Reaching up his hand traveled the distance across her skin. Painfully taking in every scrape and cut and bite mark he could find. His fingers moved in a trance as he was spellbound by the pain had endured.
Shawn's hands moved around her back and he craddled her lower back in his hands as he pulled her down. One arm swimming up her back gently and cupping around the back of her neck as he pulled her down into a kiss. He pulled her down on top of him. A layer of dust puffed up as they landed on the dusty sheets and his jaw moved in a motion counter clockwise as his tongue swam into her mouth. He had never wanted someone so badly. From everything they went through. Everything they had survived it was because of each other they had survived it. They made each other better because they both saw light in one another.
Lara tried to recall something more stressful in her life, while figuring out how to raise a corpse in the middle of the cemetery as a sixteen year old, acne covered girl was definitely in the top ten she labeled the whole dark realm incident as number one. It took a toll on them, both physical and mentally and while she’d prefer to leave that gloomy world in the clutches of memories she wouldn’t hesitate to dart back in if it meant watching his back. She didn’t know this part of town too well but she passed by a few times on the way to a quint little salon owned by a talkative young red head who didn’t ask questions every time Lara came back with pale hair as if she hadn’t known hair dye all her life.
“I was hoping you’d say that”, her throat felt scratchy from the stale air of that dimension that tore through the like a hurricane, it felt as if she hadn’t tasted water in years but she wasn’t entirely focused on the thirst digging through her lips while more pressing matters begged her attention. She rolled her eyes with an appreciative glance at his protective gesture, the car moved almost mockingly slowly before it rounded a corner and left her peripheral vision. Lara could see the subtle relaxation in the tense muscles of his shoulders as the car drove off, she knew his nerves had to be fried after everything and she was worried about the ordeals he suffered in the dark when she couldn’t find him. for all she knew he could have been dragged through hell and back with time to spare, Lara couldn’t think about it without feeling her chest close in with concern.
Her lips tilted into a soft, charming smile at the touch of his hand to her cheek. They looked like crap really, she couldn’t remember the last time she looked this bad but she didn’t have the energy to dig through old memories and faded thoughts. She could see the vicious tears in his jeans, the oily claws printed into the fabric over his knee and the patches of dirt littering his body in a gentle tug of war with bloody stains. Lara’s body ached slightly at the sudden engagement with motion but a few steps in she grew accustomed to the painful tugs of nerves still on high alert and followed behind him in a brisk, comfortable pace.
The street felt empty and void, she glanced up at the high decrepit walls of an old apartment building and saw the yellow dress of a tall woman billow in the breeze. The spirit offered her a mournful frown before tossing her gravity defying weight over the edge. Lara watched the blood tear through her cranium and stain the sidewalk before the ghostly visage reappeared at the edge of the building’s roof. There was more in this world than simple ghosts begging to talk to someone who had the capabilities to hear them. Some spirits danced in their demise for an eternity, like a song playing on a loop and they relived their death over and over again for the span of an eternity. Others, darker spirits she rarely confronted were humanoid figures cloaked in dark fog, they scared the living shit out of her. Not because of their ghastly faceless appearance but because of their ability to leave her littered in bruises and claw marks. She never told anyone but it’d been months since she even saw a spirit caught in a loop, much less a shadowy demonic figure out for blood.
The vacant hotel’s quiet emptiness was more comforting than she thought it’d be. No one sat minding their business behind the front desk, there were few keys hanging against the hooks in the wall and peeling paint behind them. Lara glanced around the vacant halls hoping to avoid any more spirit debuts, she had enough of that already and in addition to the shove of torment from that dark realm she didn’t have any patience for pestering ghosts. The dull whispers in her mind was ever present, a numbing consequence from speaking to the dead. the thud of the door busting open from the frame willed her focus as she followed him inside.
The dusty smell of the room was far more welcoming than the rotten stench tearing through her nose in that dark realm she didn’t fully grasp or understand. Lara spent a few seconds staring out of the window while he peeled off his jacket, her cold fingers rubbed against her jeans in hopes of losing the dirt staining her skin. She took in a deep breath of air before turning back to face him, he was sitting down on the bed and she couldn’t help but frown in worry at the sight of blood and dirt staining his figure. She hated to see him hurt.
There was something complex dancing in his gaze, she was curious but her own thoughts were running on a pace of their own. Her feet carried her closer until she relaxed into the warmth of his hands on her hips. For a second she thought she might burst out laughing, they fit so wonderfully in the dusty, decrepit room with their own bodies battered and bruised that it seemed humorously surreal. “You don’t have to” her voice was soft worried he might blame himself for the cuts littering her porcelain skin, she didn’t want him to think he was guilty of anything when he was the one who saved her from the clutches of that place.
Nevertheless, she relaxed into the cool touch of the air to her bare skin, the shirt was filthy and bloody and she much preferred having it strewn aside than sitting on her figure as a painful reminder that the dark truly hid awful things. She felt the pale locks of her hair caress her shoulders and a quick roll of her eyes reminded her she needed to dye it, again. She stared at Shawn with intrigue as the nerves lining her skin burst to life under the addictive touch of his fingers to her skin.
Lara’s lips slipped into a comfortable grin as she followed the gentle lead of his touch, her lips melted to his in the gleeful passion of a kiss she’d remember for the rest of her life. Her knees buckled to straddle his hips as she dived into the kiss with every ounce of passion raking her tired body. Even then the taste of his lips made her feel as close to the true meaning of life as it ever got for her. Lara smiled into the kiss a she slowly raked her fingers through his silver locks. She wanted him, every ounce of his strikingly perfect skin and flawless mind.
(Fades to black)
Lara rested her temple on his chest, she still felt the touch of dirt and light stains of blood on her skin but the pain was slowly disappearing under the warmth of his embrace. Her slender fingers traced unseen patterns into his chest as she felt the core of her thoughts echo through her mind, it left a painstakingly happy smile on her chapped lips. Lara loved him, not because he was a fool with a reputation for having women swooning, not because he was absolutely extraordinary in bed and not because he was immensely powerful but because he forced the voices in her mind to a silent stupor, drew a sense of hope to her cluttered mind and made the pain of the world dissipate into the addiction to a feeling she hadn’t felt before. With every ounce of confidence in her mind, Lara knew she loved him and she’d go through it all again if it meant they’d end up at the same place in the happy embrace of passion.

When it was all over with Shawn allowed his eyes to close. He couldn't remember the last time his body had felt the gentle pull of sleep, but he welcomed it. After everything they had been through he was exhausted. His mind raced with the events of what seemed like weeks, but they were only in the dark lands a few hours.
Time moved more slowly there. Within moments he was asleep. He couldn't help it. He couldn't fight the tired feeling pushing his eyelids closed a moment longer. When he woke, he woke to find himself alone in the room. Instantly his heart began to race. He was jerked out of his groggy feeling by heart gripping panic. Shawn slid out of bed and quickly pulled on some pants. He didn't have a shirt to change into so he remained bare chested.
A crushing weight of the familiar struck him as he looked at the grey skies. They reminded him of the sunken place. The shadow dimension. Storm clouds rolled over head. Chains of lightning flooded the clouds but refused to leave the safety of their stratosphere. It gave him a bad feeling. A low fog rolled over the ground. One hell of a storm was coming. He could sense it. It was damn frightening. He was never the biggest fan of storms. Funny huh? A big bad thug like Shawn Silverman afraid of a little thunder and lightening but he had his reasons. Shawn let go of the curtain he was peaking out from behind
He opened the door and stepped ouside allowing the door to close and latch behind him. The wind was strong. The trees swayed in the distance. He squinted his eyes to see around him that the city looked deader than before. It almost looked barren. He was about to really start to panic when he heard the sound of music.
Shawn wasn't so much scared as he was curious now. He walked on bare feet across the splintery wood of the deck. The music grew louder the more he went towards the side parking lot. There were trees and treeline skirting around the edges of the parking lot. It was there just at the entrance to a Forrest that a big red and white circus tent sat. The music was definitely coming from there. "What the fuck?" He questioned himself.
Curiosity pulling his steps forward he was almost drawn there with a hypnotic sense of the bizarre. It was hypnotic. That was the very best word for it because it was an obscure mutant ability that drove him forward. This mutant had the ability to latch onto a person and force them to walk in any direction for as long as he wanted. He could make him walk until their feet bled if he wished. Shawn felt the tug of tempation pulling him along but his mind was so curiously focused on the music that he didn't notice it wasn't under his own free will that he walked there.
Could Lara have come this way? He stopped in front of the tent. In the center of the tent was a ticket taker booth. The side said open. It hunt in front of the booth on a painted wooden sign with crude read paint. There was a sign just above that, that read "FREE ADMISSION TO MUTANTS!" Shawn raised an eyebrow. "Lara!?" He called out hoping to hear her answer back. He heard nothing over the sound of music.
The sign above the tent read "GAVIN SINCLAIR'S CIRCUS OF CURIOSITIES AND WONDERS!" And letters smaller than that below it reading "COME ON IN AND WITNESS EXOTIC PLUNDERS!" The sign was rod iron and painstakingly crafted. "What a fucking crock." Shawn sneered and pushed his way inside. He had to see if Lara had come this way. And he was more than a little curious to see why a circus tent was in an abandoned part of the city.

Lara woke up early, she normally didn’t sleep well but the few moments of deep rest offered her more peace than the nights she laid under the plush covers by herself. When she woke up she couldn’t tear the image of the woman plunging to her death from her mind. A smile littered her lips as she turned to see Sean enveloped in a calm sleep, she wished with everything inside her that she could reserve that feeling of harmony on his broken features. Lara wanted to lean forward and press a kiss to his forehead but she worried it would wake him, instead she slipped out of the bed with the most grace she could muster. Her bare feet made inaudible thuds against the hardwood floor as she slipped into her clothes, as tattered and dirty as it was. She glanced back for a single moment to engrave his sleeping form into her mind before she slipped back out of the dust kissed building.
With every step she took her mind relished in an almost eternal pleasure, every day on this unruly planet she never experienced that utter, emotional high like she did with Shawn. The slight waves of her hair blew softly over her shoulders as she embraced the sight of the tumbling spirit with a solemn frown. Lara looked disgusted at the blood splatter tearing through her cranium before pressing her open palms lightly against the almost iridescent crimson touch to the sidewalk. Lara forced her mind into the depths of her mutation, she normally didn’t spend too much time delving into her connection with the spirit world when it came to ghosts but she couldn’t stand idly by and watch the graceful beauty of a young woman plunge to her death for an infinity. With the grateful touch emanating through her mind at Shawn’s selfless efforts to bring them back from that dark realm she thought she’d do something good with the power dripping in her veins.
She felt the deep dive of the spirit into her skin like she was enveloped by the overbearing lack of gravity, a small white light emanated from the soft skin tracing her palms as she forced the spirit to a realm of peace. It left her enveloped by a slight tiresome exhale as she leaned against the wall to catch her breath. If aiding spirits to the other side didn’t have utter consequences she’d do it all the time but the more the helped the more she drew in those inhuman figures doused in darkness to her, she knew one spirit wouldn’t do her much harm and it left her feeling just a little bit proud for being more than the mundane genes of the human race.
The sky was slowly rolling in grey storm clouds, she didn’t particularly prefer lightning but she enjoyed the low thuds of rain against a window when she couldn’t sleep. A soft melody reached her ears, any other day she’d write it off as someone diving into their odd playlist with no consideration for the masses but the vacant streets drew every ounce of her curiosity. She rolled her eyes following after the melody until it rang louder in her mind, she stopped for a second with a slightly horrified thought dancing though her mind.
“Not a fucking clown”, she recalled a terrifying movie she watched when she was fifteen years old and she never wanted to be haunted by a red nosed asshole in bright colors and a goofy grin. Still, she wanted to know where it came from so she followed through the parking lot. The music felt almost hallucinogenic, she thought about Shawn but she thought she’d duck back and find him if things went South. The big red and white circus tent felt strange in the vacant landscape, she turned slightly to look over her shoulders but she couldn’t look to another stranger for clarity on her sanity with no one else around. Even the spirit wasn’t around to duck over the building and witness the odd tent contrasting the building storm.
Lara thought about turning to find Shawn, stepping into a hauntingly weird tent didn’t exactly fall into the heap of her best choices but her feet felt hypnotized by a life of their own. She stopped for a quick second to read the bright sign welcoming mutants free of cost. She didn’t have the kind of abilities that came across as mutant if people didn’t hear her odd conversations with souls who didn’t share the same space as they did and she couldn’t understand how some carnival knew she possessed the odd, mutated gene that made her a little more special than the humans enjoying their dull lives.
‘I’m gonna be killed by a psycho clown, fucking perfect’, her mind’s thoughts felt oddly loud in her head as she stepped through the light flap of the tent. She turned for a brief moment to see no one following her inside, when her head shifted to take in the large space she couldn’t help but jump back at the sight of a charismatic man by the side of a short haired blonde she didn’t recognize.
“Fucking hell! You have me a heart attack”, she made sure her back faced the way she entered in hopes for a quick escape. She wished she’d gone back to get Shawn now, nevertheless she couldn’t help but turn around at the heavy sensation of someone stepping up behind her. She rounded on her heel with her fingers curled into her palm, her eyes grew wide when she felt the touch of Shawn’s cheek to her fist. Her palm instantly touched the skin she’d met so harshly and smiled trying to conceal a slight chuckle at the irony of the moment.
“You scared the shit out of me”, the apology laced in her tone for the small second she had to face him before her worry about the strangers grew to a boiling intensity in her mind. She set her shoulder close to his to face them, “who the hell are you?”, her eye glanced at the tent’s flap for a second wondering what on earth manifested in that day. One day’s rest and peace is all she wanted, they already went through hell and back and suddenly a circus bumped into their path like a haunted idea of cosmic irony and she hated every second of it.

Gavin stood there smiling. As the two young mutants entered the tent the lights were all turned out. A single spotlight rested on Gavin and Alyssa. They were standing in the middle of the tent in the middle of the woods. Nothing could be more honest. Nothing could seem less complicated. "WHY YOU'RE JUST IN TIME TO SEE THE SHOW DEARIES!" Gavin said with all the showmanship he could muster.
There was a brilliant smile on his face and the modest bow he took for the lady only added to the theatrics. "WELCOME TO GAVIN SINCLAIR'S CIRCUS OF CURIOSITIES AND WONDERS. A PLACE OF RARE BEAUTY AND MYSTERIOUS PLUNDERS. HAVE YOU A TASTE FOR THE MACABRE!?" As he said this fire burst forward from behind him. A man who breathed fire spit flames that melted the flesh of another man. The man didn't scream he took the flames dancing and tearing at his skin with a big toothy grin. The melting man had a spotlight of his own now.
He pooled in the floor and then crawled out of the puddle that stained the dirt. He crawled out of the puddle like a creature rising from the black lagoon. The spotlight turned off on the melted man and his fire breathing friend. "PERHAPS YOU CRAVE DANGEROUS AND ENCHANTMENT?" Another spotlight, this time to his right side lit up. There was a man standing there who had razor sharp claws and glowing red eyes. He was smiling a cheshire grin. An omnious grin that filled Silver Shadow with dread. He loomed a little closer.
Step, by step....By step until the spotlight faded. Possibly leaving that hideous thing still looming closer, only unseen in the dark. "DON'T WORRY KIDDIES! IT'S JUST A SHOW!" Gavin proclaimed. Gavin himself was very offputting. Tattooed under his chin and across his neck were rows of razor sharpe teeth. Gavin himself wore a scarf to cover it. Though They almost looked as if they could reach out and bite you... And they could.
Through the wonderful application of his ability those teeth could become very real. Gavin could turn the bottom part of his jaw into razor sharp teeth. The more frightening aspect of his ability was that he could change the shape of his body with more detailed art. If he got a tattoo sleeve to make his arm look cybernetic he could effectively mainfest it to reality and become part cyborg. Such a curious man with curious talents.
He stood there in the spotlight holding a megaphone. His motives were not instantly apparent. He was putting on a show for them though they were the only ones in attendance. "WELCOME TO THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH. MUTANTS COME FOR FREE. AND THEY NEVER....EVER LEAVE." He said with a horrifying smile. "THEY'LL NEVER WANT TO LEAVE A PLACE OF SUCH MAGIC AND WONDER!" Gavin said. He extended his arms out to the sky and allowed the tattoos of butterflies that lined his fair wrists to drip away and fly off.
They filled the sky almost thousands of them all different colors and patterns each more beautiful than the next. They were almost memorizing as they flew around in the spotlight and one landed on the palm of Lara's hand and seemed to stare at her. Gavin smiled. "WE NEED TO TALK FOLKS...." Gavin said to Lara and Silver Shadow. Shawn looked up from the butterfly on Lara's hand. He had a distrustful look on his face. He didn't like the way this fucker kept smiling at them, but he was obviously a mutant. Shawn only wished he knew what his intentions were.
Alyssa held her arms folded loosely over her chest with her golden hair barely caressing the bare skin of her shoulders, she found herself grinning at the charisma dripping from Gavin as much as the obvious power he possessed. In all her lives she never expected traveling with the likes of a circus but she couldn’t deny the thrill of their plots entwining with the threads of fate. The two young mutants, although obviously through a lot if their raw and battered appearance told her anything were still lacking a purpose in her eyes. She thought of them as young, brash and innocent – all traits that could be molded into the perfect mutant prideful of the evolved status she carried like a badge of honor.
Her lips tilted into a soft smile as a light laugh slipped through her ever ruby lips, Gavin knew how to put on a show and while she couldn’t deny that her talents rooted in the warrior always blossoming just under the surface she quite enjoyed the vibrant charismatic draw of a theatrical approach to life. Some of the lively flames heatedly closed in on the skin of her shoulder, she opted to force the red hot energy aside with a flick of her wrist and watched the mutant dissolve into a puddle of absolute nothing before rising from the ashes so to speak. During the time she spent regaining a sense of belonging with Gavin and the mutants begging his lead she’d come to appreciate the unique talents of those gifted with the genetic predisposition for greatness.
Alyssa blew a soft puff of air towards a wandering butterfly before it’s recently manifested wings fluttered off to another part of the tent shrouded in darkness. She found the mixed looks of shock and confusion on their faces tantalizingly vulnerable, she wasn’t as invested in the complete erasing and reestablishing of memories as Gavin was through Ladainia’s uniquely useful ability but she felt the potential slipping off the tall man clad in silver hair and pale eyes. There was something powerful about him, she’d spent enough time roaming the vast reached of the globe to know the telltale tug of hairs standing up in the crook of her neck and small, lingering wave of goosebumps that made her appreciate the company of powerful mutants.
She noticed the rough shake of the young girl’s hand, she didn’t seem to appreciate the beautifully colorful butterfly gently kissing the skin of her palm. Her fingers slid over Gavin’s shoulder as she stepped forward towards the two newcomers, she spared the powerful mutant she’d grown to care for deeply as before a quick wink before extending a palm to the young couple clad in the dramatic welcome of the circus.
“Don’t be rude now, we don’t bite. Not always”, her fingers curled towards the flawless skin of her palm as two chairs ripped from the dark nooks and crannies not lit up by the harsh spotlight. The telekinesis burning through her immortal veins gave the two mutants a rough tug forward like an invisible shape pushing a rough palm against their backs. The chairs shifted until it pressed into the flesh behind their knees, buckled their legs and forced them to sit down for the festivities.
“You look like you’ve seen a ghost darling”, she chuckled softly unaware of how accurately ironic the words echoing into Lara’s mind truly was. She ignored the harsh glare and slid her polished nails over Shawn’s bare shoulders with a happy grin to Gavin. “You’re very special aren’t you handsome, there’s something deliciously powerful about you. We offer you a lot more than the bland world out there, I suggest you keep a very open mind”, Alyssa stalked around mutant with a taste of charm dripping off her every word. Over all the years she spent stalking for the taste of life when she was granted an infinite source she’d grown to truly appreciate the painstakingly beautiful company of those who carried the power of the evolved. She’d grown to think it was one of the things that drew her closer to Gavin, especially in the onset of their reunion in her latest taste of life’s ripe adventures.
Shawn wasn't buying it. He was ready to tell RingLing brothers to shove his circus shit straight up his ass. Suddenly there was a blonde beside him. How did he not notice her before. Gavin continued to speak and entice and amaze but Shawn was tuning it out. All that theatrical shit did was piss him off. It wasn't until the blond started speaking that they truly had his attention. Not because he was into her but because she spoke honestly.
It wasn't rehearsed canned dialogue and flashy bullshit it was real. She moved around him. He felt her fingers dance across his shoulders but he said nothing. His eyes followed her and when she dipped behind him he turned his head to follow her movements more. He wrapped an arm around Lara. As much as to protect her as to stake his claim in her that he was spoken for and for blondy to piss off. It didn't last. Suddenly two chairs shot out of the dark and before he could react he was falling on his ass in a chair. He couldn't stand up.
As if some invisible force willed him to sit there. In the shadows someone watched. Only, they didn't watch. They listened with blind interest and good intentions. Ladainia knew that her father liked meeting new mutants. He was very persausive and often times he convinced them to stay. Though everyone that had, their memories rearranged and exchanged with fond memories of the circus Ladainia and the others bought those lies. Everyones memories were slightly altered to include the new recruit.
They all had the same memories so it wasn't that hard for a powerful pyschic like Andromeda to forge. Shawn fought against his invisible ties. Butterfly boy stepped up in front of him and got down on know knee. He leaned his arm across his knee and looked closer at Shawn. "Son, you got the look of a man who's looking for a head he can knock off with a shovel." Gavin's voice was drenched in a deep south Louisianan drawl.
It rolled off of every word the asshole spoke. "Yours would do nicely." Shawn spat back. Gavin stared at him a moment and then started to laugh. it was a deep belly laugh as if he had heard the funniest thing ever. "No, no I don't think it will. See you and I have similar interests." Shawn rolled his eyes. "Yeah? How's that? You got a think for kinky high heels and fish net stockings too?" There was a smirk on his face. Gavin simply shook his head and smiled. "No son...I'm talk'n bout GAAAAAAAAADEM. They're after you boy. After you too girly. I'd say your friends, the Fool's.....Are in a whole heap'o shit right bout now."
Gavin looked to Alyssa. His love. His muse. Then back to the two in the chairs. "Now I found you two wondering through the misty city. I could turn you loose. Or I could give you a home." Shawn looked around the tent. "I think that's a hard pass there chief." Gavin smiled wider. "Well, I figured that'd be your answer. There is a third option however. Help us fight." Gavin's smile was gone. His face was serious. Gavin intended to turn GADEM inside out. He wanted to drop them to their knees. But they weren't his main target. Humanity was his end game though GADEM laid before him like their great protectors. He couldn't start his uprising with those assholes around.
"I knew one of your boys. Stayed with us a spell. His name was Samael. Pretty little thing, cute little flittery wings." Gavin's back bled ink and his wings ripped through his shirt. "Sorta like these ones here." He smiled and flapped his wings and rose above the chairs. Gavin extended his arms out and his eyes rolled back into his head. His eyes grew wide and white as ink spilled over the dirt .
He held his arms out and rained down his creations. "Course if you chose to ignore my generous offer of friendship then that makes us enemies." Gavin flapped his wings a few more times and watched as Alyssa took a step back. From the dirt rose monsters of myth and legend. A werewolf clawed it's way out of the dirt. As did a legion of zombies Gavin had tattooed along his inner forearm. He controlled them with a though. Beings of the dead and the white wolf of the full moon. Shawn watched this with growing disbelief. "Holy fucking shitballs!" He cried out as his mouth hung open unbelieving.

Lara spent every moment wrapped in the encounter tossing a single word into a thousand audible echoes in her mind – bullshit. Every drop of charm from the man’s lips were shrouded in a mystery she didn’t appreciate, there was something in his smile she didn’t trust and a gnawing feeling scolding her for following the music in the first damn place. She glared angrily at the blonde who made a very annoying debut, “how about you shove your ideas right up your ass until you taste the bullshit you’ve been saying”. Lara shot the venomous tone towards the tall blonde who seemed more than amused by the wits in her deathly glare, she felt the safety of Shawn’s warmth before she realized how much she appreciated him walking into the same eerie tent as she did. It was one mess after another and she was getting real damn tired of being tossed through a meat grinder, in some ways quite literally.
A small yelp slipped through her lips as the sharp angle of a chair buckled her knees and an unseen force ripped her unto it’s surface hard enough that every struggle in her slender figure was futile and wasted energy. Lara tried to force the tip of her shoe into the kneeling asshole but the invisible hold was strong enough to fight against the cruel decline of his theatrical tone. Her eyes narrowed into a firm glare looking every which way for some measure of an exit, at least this time she didn’t have to march through endless darkness in hopes of stumbling onto Shawn. Her lips tilted into a proud smirk at Shawn’s retorts, she knew he wasn’t dumb enough to buy the shit this guy sold, neither of them was.
“Anyone ever tell you your laugh sucks”, there was a heavy pressure against her chest and she gasped slightly to see the blonde smiling almost teasingly. The bitch was playing a dangerous game and Lara hated being on the losing end. Her lips tilted open at the mention of GADEM, she never had a run in with them but she was fully aware of their hatred to mutants and deep devotion to controlling those they considered a threat to humanity.
Alyssa spared Gavin a soft smile doused in love and affection, she adored every second back in his company like the sweet ecstasy of a drug she couldn’t get enough of. “Fuck you and your options”, her tone dripped with a venomous distrust as she fought against the unseen restraints forced onto them by Alyssa. Lara didn’t know Samael well, not personally but the thought was cut short at the sight of wings bursting from Gavin’s back. There was something dangerously powerful about him, enough that she worried for their safety.
“I’m sorry”, she apologized softly to Shawn with the brief moment of peace at the vigorous leap of the mutant lunatic to the air, “should’ve stayed in bed”. Alyssa glanced at the couple with a curious glance, she remembered being young and passionate in her first life, while it didn’t exactly end in an age old love tale she could see the telltale signs of affection and lust mingled together in the perfect harmony of love.
“I’ll take the psycho clown now”, Lara spoke more to herself than anyone as she watched the werewolf claw its way out of the dirt like a sculpture growing to life in front of her eyes. Her pale blue eyes littered in violet specks lit up in an almost smirk seeing the familiar visage of corpses rising from the bland blanket of dirt.
With Alyssa’s hold still firmly shoving Lara and Shawn into the rough wood of the chair she had no choice but test the limits of her mutation. Lara focused her sole attention on the pale, dead eyes of the zombies with the raw intent of freeing them. Slowly she felt the shift of her mutation grow alive through her steady gaze, one of the corpses eagerly took their mistress’ ideals to heart and whipped around to slam it’s rotting arm into Alyssa’s stomach.
The immortal never saw it coming purely for the fact that she didn’t expect the pale haired girl to retaliate through Gavin’s creations. It didn’t take long for her to regain her steady footing but enough time for Lara to slip through the heavy telekinetic hold to join the undead legion with a cocky smirk lingering on her lips.
“How about option four, you sick motherfucker? We get the hell outta this fucked up fantasy of yours and you get the hell out of Michigan, it’s a fair deal. Take it”, slowly her influence spread from one zombie to the next, the close connection of her mutation with anything and everything that passed from the land of the living, whether they were corporeal spirits haunting her mind in low whispers or decomposing soldiers waiting to be tainted by her hold.
“Oh sweetheart, you’re severely outgunned”, she heard the sweet melody off Alyssa’s voice as the immortal leaned on one leg with her arms folded amused over her chest. Lara tried to hold the conversation in hopes of spreading her unique influence to as many of the zombies as she could. The last ting she wanted was to be rolling around the crazy shit that made up a circus of mutants obviously not afraid to result to unique lengths for their recruitment.
Lara turned to smirk at the blonde with a dangerous glare pacing in her gaze, "As long as he's around I'm pretty sure you're screwed", she glanced to Shawn for a second. she wasn't fully aware what the true limitations were to her powers and although they weren't necessarily limitless or powerful she never came up short when she needed them most. still, the true reality of the mutants facing them were unbeknownst to the spirit medium cloaked in pale curls and bright eyes.

Gavin was not expecting this. A futile tug against his wishes. A less than domineering struggle for control of his creatures. He watched for a moment from the sky with some interest. He could feel her influence on his children. His creatures of the night. Gavin didn't expect them to go after Alyssa. The second one even laid a hand on his beloved it shut it down quick. The werewolf dove at the crowd of mindless creatures and tore them apart limb from limb.
Gavin watched as murky blood flew in the air in fine red ribbons. Gavin could feel the burning sensation as his arm was scared by the sacrifice. So there lied power in the girl. Gavin was not so sure about the man yet. His curious silver hair and bloody exterior told him there was something odd about him though Gavin himself couldn't sense what it was. "ENOUGH!" Gavin called down from the sky.
He flapped his wings mightily as he lowered himself beside Alyssa. The werewolf behind him panting hard, turned it's head to the sky and howled longing to see the moon. There was life there... Within these creatures Gavin so equivalently created. Gavin smirked. "Tell ya what son. Indulge me. Let me get a glimpse of your power and I'll let both of you walk right out that door. But reeeeemeeeeember. GADEM is'a track you boys, so don't go saying Gavin Sinclair didn't offer out a helping hand in your time of need."
Shawn didn't say anything at first. He only stared at Gavin. "Fight me boy! And you and your girly pal can walk out of here scott free" Gavin turned his head to Alyssa. "Dear would you mind stepping back a touch. Wouldn't want this man's nice blood to get on those pretty dimples." Asshole was just oozing confidence. Shawn still said nothing. He clinched his fists. Suddenly his eyes burst with white flames. His hair white fire.
He became the shiny hero once more. "Ooooh, now would'cha look at that?" Gavin flapped his wings slightly impressed and endlessly curious. Shawn stared at him with eyes that didn't blink. They didn't look around the room for ways to beat this they stared straight ahead at Gavin Sinclair.... "Son, Im sure your stylist is tickled to death by that but I ain't really impressed." Gavin was having fun mocking the shiny hero now.
Shawn stood perfectly still watching the man before him with interest and unsettling eyes. After more silence Gavin got flustered. "You just gone stand there?!?" Shawn began to sweat dark energy. It bleed from the pours on his back first as little black droplets pooling on his skin then they erupted into long shadowy vipers of pure dark energy. They protruded from his back the way his other appendages did. As if they belonged there. As if they always were there.
One of the vipers turned and looked at Lara who was standing behind him, though Shawn's head did not turn. He only continued to stare upwards at the man flying above his head. Lara stumbled backwards into the darkness of shadow as the Viper opened it's venomous mouth and hissed at her. When she was aways a bit the viper turned it's attention, like the other three back to Gavin. Shawn stood there shirtless.
Four vipers ripping through the skin of his back. They flowed from his mind, through his body and out of his back.... Literal thoughts of contempt; living breathing contemptuous thoughts. The moved and their heads oscelated from side to side. Their nasty shadowy tongues darted and flicked out of their mouths. White light spilled from their eyes, which were two little dots on their heads and their mouths opened to reveal blinding bright light. Shawn dug into the dark lands to pull out four vipers of pure evil to harness the power of his white light.
Shawn was doing it. He was harnessing the power of dark energy. He did this by willfully thinking on a moment when his morals won over his desire to do evil. It was a rare occasion, but he did have one memory to pull from. The time he broke into a house to steal everything in it because the owners hadn't been home in days.... Only to find they had gone on vacation and left their 10 year old daughter home alone.
There was no food in the house, the power wasn't even on for fuck's sake. Shawn paid the cable bill over the phone, albeit with a stolen credit card, but he also brought the kid some groceries. After she had a good meal Shawn wiped his prints off everything in the house and caleld social services. It was the one time he could remember not being a prick. Gavin rolled his eyes and sighed. "Son...You better start singing or dancing or some shit because you're BORING THE FUCK OUT OF ME!" Gavin's words ripped through the all but empty tent.
Behind him Ladainia grabbed Lara by the arm. She held a finger to her lips and shh'ed her scream. She did not have her glasses on. Her eyes stared at her. Her brow pushed up in a worried expression. Gavin saw the snakes moving and hissing and smiled. That's more like it he thought. I don't know what this fucker can do, but I'd love to give him a test run. Gavin's wings flapped again as his arms began to bleed ink. High up on his shoulder were two knifes. They bled down until they reached his hands and then Gavin willed them to be real.
They solidified into the palms of his hands and he gripped the handles with malice in his intent. All eyes were on the impending fight. No one noticed Ladainia sneaking off with Lara. She hurried Lara outside of the tent's entrance. "You have to go! Now. My father is crazy. He will kill you before he lets you leave here. I don't care what he says you have to go while you friend is holding him off." Ladainia could see the struggle on her face and she knew she didn't have time to explain. She grabbed Lara's shoulders and times seemed to stand still.
All around them the world was brighter and more colorful than usual. Ladainia didn't see colors. She didn't see at all so everything seemed to pop just a little bit more when she got these occasional glimpses of sight. She took a gasp and looked around at the world in front of her. The woman she was talking too was very pretty. She smiled, but then remembered what she was doing. She squeezed her hand and everything changed. The world around them seemed to blurr as they were sent through a vortex.
Changing locations as if they were hurled through space only they didn't move a muscle but the world itself was thrust all around them. When the blur stopped they were standing on a hill. The trees swayed in the gentle breeze and Ladainia reached up and tucked a strand of hair away from her face. She tucked it behind her ear and pointed at the Grave. "Here lies Shawn Silverman. Friend. Father. Fool til the end. R.I.P. brother." One of the fools obviously commissioned the headstone. Ladainia's eyes moved from the gravestone to the woman. She was tearing up herself. A sympathetic crier.
Ladainia gave her a moment to grieve but there was no time. She grabbed Lara by her shoulder's and spun her around quickly. When she whirled her around everything changed. they weren't on a hill anymore. They were in a home. Shawn sat looking out the window with a shotgun in his lap. Lara herself tried to keep the children quiet not wanting them to make to much noise. Outside the window the world was in flames.
There was riots and civil unrest in the streets. Everything was broken or breaking down. Society collapsed engulfed by panic and war. A war between the humans and the mutants. Gavin's war. Ladainia was careful not to take her hand off Lara fore, if her hand came away the vision ended. Ladainia spoke quielty. "These are the things that will come. Or can come. I can't tell you which. These are visions of the future or possible future.
It is up to you to change it, but you must leave. No future with my father is a future worth having." There was haunted sorrow in her voice. She had tried to run away from the circus several times, though something always brought her back. Some invisible spell or some haunted melody. She couldn't be certain, she only knew she was trapped her by invisible chains. Ladainia pulled her hand away and suddenly the world was as it always was. No longer frozen in time but back outside the tent. "You must hurry!" She urged.
Back inside the tent the vipers spoke. "HIS POWER IS GREAT. SUCH A MORSEL FOR US TO DEVOUR. FEED US SHINY HERO!" "FEED US!" "FEED US" "WE ARE SO HUNGRY FOR CORRUPT SOUL" Shawn still said nothing. As Gavin began to fly at him at break neck speeds. He was fast. Faster than Shawn had anticipated and Gavin swooped by slicing the skin of his throat in a superficial cut. Shawn grinded his teeth together. This asshole wants a fight. That's what he's going to get Shawn thought.
Lara covered her face with her palm for a second to inch away from the dark ink bleeding from the group of ensnared zombies. One after another they futilely attempted to shield her from the onslaught of the werewolf, they weren’t a match for the vicious canines tearing their limbs apart. Still, she forced her mind into the death grasping the undead shielding her to keep their strings within her grasp even when she could feel the draw of Gavin’s power that brought them to life. Lara just wanted the chaos of the day to end, she wanted to get a steaming shower and forget about the turmoil relentlessly tugging at her and Shawn.
Alyssa held a hand to her stomach for a second where the zombie’s nails gently tore through the thin layer of skin coating her abdomen. She glared at the idea of being caught off guard for the pure fact that she believed an immortal to be smarter, tactful when it came to the unknown. Her neck craned in the slightest to glance at Gavin as he lowered himself by her side. She smirked at the unique howl erupting from the canine’s mouth at the moon hanging beautifully against the night’s sky.
Her gaze shifted from Gavin to Shawn, as much as she would have liked to see Shawn beat down the ridiculous asshole she didn’t trust any aspect of the situation. Her mind convinced her there was a deep seated evil rooted in the taunts and Shawn’s true power might shackle their hope of escaping if Gavin would be desperate enough to keep him there for the raw power pumping through his veins. She also knew they weren’t leaving without a little spilt blood and she’d much rather have Gavin’s littering the ground than Shawn’s.
Alyssa smiled fondly at Gavin, set a palm against his chest with an almost playful touch to her hazel gaze. “When you’re done I’ll have some fun with the little brat”, she only spared Lara a brief glare before focusing her attention on Gavin’s assault on the silver haired mutant. One weakness she supposed would never relent was her deep taste for the sight of blood, just like the good old days with Gladiators clad with armor and ready to draw every ounce of blood from their competitors.
Lara focused her sight on Shawn, he suddenly looked as bright as he did in that rotten place they escaped. She was enthralled by the white flames dancing in his gaze and oozing off his pale hair. Even then, a small smile of adoration slipped over her lips before a deadly glare replaced the gentle caress of admiration on her features at Gavin’s loud voice. There was a thousand words begging to assault Gavin’s persistent retorts but she was shoved to an awestruck silence at the light emanating off Shawn in combination with the thick tension littering the air like an endless source of pollution.
Lara could see the thin layer of sweat littering Shawn’s brow moments before slender vipers composed of nothing more than raw power and dark shadows ripped from his back. A gasp slipped by her lips, not because she was horrified by the sight but because a worry bubbled in the deepest recesses of her mind pondering who was truly in control, the vipers or Shawn.
Her eyes narrowed at the Viper turning it’s shadowy form to look at her, her legs felt numb as she stumbled back worried about the Viper’s constant stare. The stiff worry in her shoulders relaxed in the slightest when the viper turned it’s attention on Gavin instead. She nearly hurled her fist into Ladainia’s face, the yelp of surprise hooked in her throat and steadied her breathing just a little. The girl’s eyes were something else, pale and unique and in some way absolutely terrifying. Lara would have shoved her off if there wasn’t a building feeling in the pit of her stomach that the girl meant good in contrast to the bastard taunting Shawn.
Lara hesitated with a single glance back at Shawn before she followed the nagging tug of Ladainia’s touch. “Your father?! I get that he’s batshit crazy but I’m not leaving without Shawn”, stubbornness radiated off her tone in unfaltering waves. She refused to leave Shawn behind, she’d go all the way to the depths of the dark dimension for him and back without a second thought. Having him busy with the lunatics of a single mutant who believed he knew what was best for both them and the club didn’t change her conviction. She wouldn’t leave him behind anywhere for any reason, regardless where, why or when.
The world felt stiff and silent for a second at the touch of Ladainia’s palms against her shoulders, the world shifted in the strangest way. Any other day she’d believe it was hallucinogenic and she was losing her mind but the seriousness radiating off the girl’s blind gaze kept her steady on her feet and anchored to the spot. Lara looked around the shift in the world, the hill felt surreal under her feet as she focused her gaze on the grave. Her heart tore in pieces at the sight of the inscription, a hand subconsciously reached up to cover a silent scream. She didn’t understand, Shawn couldn’t die, not when she could very well see his spirit until the day she met her end.
She wanted to accuse the girl of lying but she knew there was a slither of truth in the sight burdening her gaze. her fingers tenderly touched the skin of her belly through one of the many tears littering her shirt, she knew she wasn’t pregnant but a future with the potential of a child and the absence of Shawn was almost too much to bear. Tears threatened to litter her eyes as the information tore through her with more intensity than the gnaws of teeth shrouded in darkness in a realm she didn’t understand.
“it’s not possible. This is bullshit, you’re fucking with me”, even then, her gaze refused to look up to the pale blindness in the young girl’s gaze. her head felt whoozy at another change of pace as the world shifted in and out of focus. The home felt comforting, the sights within it’s walls left her just about ready to greet a searing migraine. Shawn looked older, she couldn’t rate his age on the silver tint to his hair and beard but she saw it on the stress littering his handsome features. Even if the world was only a vision, something abstract rather than solid, she still wanted to reach out and cup his face in her hand.
Slowly her mind registered the shotgun sitting in his lap, she saw herself trying to calm the worried voices of two young children clinging to her hands in fear. Lara saw the age in her own features, she saw new cuts unrecognizable against her pale skin and a tired touch to her worried gaze. Lara found herself smiling at the sight of the two youngsters resembling both her and Shawn as beautiful souls born from their love.
The streets through the window was drowning in unrest, people rushing about in a world no longer whole. There was war, obvious tragedy laced in brutal assaults between mutants and humans. “Show me how he dies? Just help me stop it”, there was a desperation lacing Lara’s words as she glanced at the girl. If she could save Shawn she had to, she couldn’t live knowing a grave waited for him in some decrepit future laced with war and chaos.
The world shifted to the same bland horizon that welcomed her outside that damned tent, she didn’t argue the girl believing full well a future with Gavin wasn’t a future worth having. Lara shook her head looking at Ladainia, “if you’re not gonna help me save him then I’ll fucking do it myself”. Her feet slowly backed towards the tent with worry lacing her gaze, “I’m not leaving him!”, Lara burst back through the tent hoping to catch Gavin off guard. She was moments away from digging her palms into his throat when an invisible force ripped her from her feet and she felt the heavy impact of the earth beneath her at the opposite end of the tent. She felt her lungs heave in effort to regain the air they lost and glanced up to see the slender legs of the blonde buying the crazy asshole’s bullshit.
“You have a nice little party trick darling, but it’s nothing compared to ours. Stay down or die”, Lara felt her fingers curl around the dirt before flinging it into the immortal’s eyes. “Go fuck yourself!”, Alyssa caught Lara’s hand with expert precision, met her sneer with a deathly glare and shoved a knee into Lara’s stomach. It was the immortal’s way of petty revenge. She grabbed Lara by the throat, shifted her weight to stand behind the pale haired mutant and forced her head to the sight of the brawl.
“Let’s see how this turns out shall we”, Lara hissed at the nails digging into her throat, welcomed the little bits of air slipping through the immortal’s vice grip and watched the fight unfold with exponentially nauseating worry burning through her. She needed Shawn to win, if not for the sole purpose of surviving then at least to greet some of the more pleasant aspects of their future together.
Shawn stood before his great advesary. There was no wind in the tent. The air was perfectly stiffling and still, though Shawns' hair whipped wildly like a hurricane moved over him. His pants whipped too as if unseen forces of wind pulled at them. Gavin watched for a moment before swooping donw to draw blood. On the first pass by Shawn felt his neck sliced. He bared his teeth in anger behind his lips. His jaw clinched but his expression for the most part stayed the same.
Gavin was back above him soaring produly. He admired the blood of the blade and smiled at it happily. The smile was short lived. One of the vipers whipped out. The one on the top left corner of his hsoulder. It whipped like a stretching shadow with limitless reach. It wrapped around Gavin's leg several times and anchered him to the spot. His wings flapped frantically to try and pull himself free of it's grasp. Though when it finished wrapping around Teeth sunk into the flesh of his ankle. GWWWWAAAAA!" Gavin cried. Another black shadowy viper grasped his other ankle and with a mind blowing force they yanked him down to the ground.
Gavin hit the ground with a thud. He sneered at Shawn and reched up one hand. He still had those tattoos on the palms of his hands. The tattoos of the beams of light. Gavin's hand began to glow green and a fiery explosion shook the world. Gavin blasted off a blast of light so powerful that it could have incenerated the mightiest of men. Shawn took this blast in the face As Lara came bursting back into the tent only to be knocked down by Alyssa. She had tried to charge Gavin who was back on his feet by time she rentered the tent. Shawn saw her hit the ground and when he turned back to face Gavin there was a green energy blast in his fast.
In the last possible second his shawody vipers swooped in front of him and formed a shield. They shifted and reshaped to wrap around Shawn like a shadowy protector. His hatred for this man and his anger at seeing Lara hit the ground fueling his dark energy. Fueling the power of his viper shield. They weren't just vipers they shifted and changed into whatever he needed. Right now he needed protection for Gavin's powerful ability. The vipers screeched a horrible unpleasant sound but they took the heat of the blast and kept Shawn safe. SCREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE! " iT WAS like nails on chalkboard.
Shawn not only got blasted through the side of the tent leaving a nice little hole, but his skin was burned. The right side of his face was covered in third degree burns. Blood trickled down his neck and face as a loose flap of skin hung down awarkwardly. He was in so much pain. He grunted and shook uncontroably as he tried to force himself to his feet. The vipers were smoking. One of their heads had been blasted off. The other three danced and hissed and urged him to his feet with non verble nasty sounds. They sounded angry. He was angry. He could feel his hatred for this place swelling in his chest.
The shadowy vipers bled. Not blood but holes of white light punctured them. Dripping lines of white oozed out of their misty like skin as they danced and swayed waiting for Shiny hero to make it to his feet. Shawn was on his feet for two seconds before looking back at the tent. He saw Gavin flying towards him like a bullet and He was hit so hard he went flying through yet another tent. This time he didn't make a hole in it. He crashed through it collapsing the whole tent on top of himself.
"Get up boy!" Gavin taunted. "I ain't done with you yet. You think you're tough? You ain't shit to me son. You're just a chore to be scratched off my list." Gavin raised his arms and bled ink that flowed through the air like misty drops of morning son. They were green in color and slighly grayish. They hovered in front of his open hands. Finally they took shape al lthe loosely floating molecules sucked in on themselfs like the force of a vacuume acted upon them and they formed a shape in the blink of an eye. It was a grenade. One for each hand. Gavin pulled the pins on them and threw them one at a time at the tent. BOOM! BOOM! He left Shawn a smoking crator in the ground.

Lara felt helpless to the dramatic events unfolding in front of her, she hated this goddamn day with every ounce of her being. All she wanted was to go back to watching her creations tear through the thugs while listening to Shawn’s offer, everything turned to shit after that. At least in the dark world he’d taken them she couldn’t put a face to the terrors but there she was aching at the touch of a blonde bitch in the dirt while the two men fought with raw intensity. Her violet speckled eyes felt heavy under the strain of watching at that awful angle with polished nails digging into the skin of her throat. As if she wasn’t already fucked enough with everything that happened, Lara felt absolute hatred towards both these mutants who chose to screw with them at the worst of times.
“Get some you fucking bastard!” her words struggled up the length of her throat as she watched the vipers tear through the flesh of his ankle. “Hush sweetheart, it’s just getting started”, there was a harsh tug of warm fingers at her throat as a few breaths eluded her lips. She tried to struggle against Alyssa’s hold, both the physical strangle and the telekinetic weight over her shoulders but she was helpless to watch the bright green blast tear through Shawn’s defenses.
“Shawn!”, she called his name with urgency at the horrible odor of burnt flesh and the nauseating sight of him falling through the tent with a brutal force. Alyssa’s fingers shifted from her throat to grasp the pale blonde hair at the base of her neck. “Stop yelling, we’re not staying in here away from all the fun”, Lara shrugged her shoulders painfully in an effort to break the invisible hold but it was useless, instead she stumbled at Alyssa’s request to see the terrifying sight of Shawn in the aftermath of the blast.
Her eyes grew wide as a deathly silence fell over her, of all the spirits she saw she never dreamed to see Shawn’s and by the burns littering his skin she didn’t know what other ruthless acts Gavin was capable of. Lara hated her mutation in that singular moment, not because of the potential to see the man she loved haunting her sight until the day she died but because it wasn’t of any use against either Gavin or Alyssa’s onslaught. She was useless, she couldn’t help herself or Shawn and it made her feel more horrible than everything inside that dark realm combined.
Lara struggled futilely against Alyssa’s hold, she wanted to intercept Gavin in his cruel swoop and take the blow to herself but she was nothing more but an onlooker as Shawn collapsed inside a tent and left her shaking in the boiling anger pumping through her veins. Alyssa’s hold faltered too late, she still saw the explosions tearing through the collapsed tent, Lara shook free from the mutant holding her shackled to the spot and planted herself between the smoldering figure amidst the aftermath. She couldn’t bear to look at him in fear she’d see the ethereal version of Shawn slipping from the confines of his body.
“Enough! We didn’t do shit to you and now you’re throwing a fucking tantrum cause we’re not interested in your psycho bullshit! Fuck you!”, Lara didn’t have to force the dangerous glare onto her features as she almost waited for another horrible attack from the bastard. Lara genuinely thought she’d die there and then but it was better being in the company of two raging, egotistical maniacs.

The explosion rocked the landscape and silence fell over the grounds in an ill fated deathly murmor. Even the wind seemed to hold it's breath as the blowing wind quieted just a bit. The wind ripped lightly at the flaps of tent that harbored Shawn's broken body in the smoldering crator. Shawn saw a bright light. It was the kind of thing you see when you die. That fabled bright light at the end of the tunnle. Am i dead? He thought for a moment. Staring at the intesne light had rendered him blind momentarily in the smoking hole. But as the clouds parted he realized the light that burned his eyes was fire. The flames of the explosinon licking against an invisible force field. Shawn winced, painfully. Half of his face was cleaved from the bone.
His face was warm, and wet and horrible. The etherial whispy shades of shadow coverd him. It was like watching black smoke trapped under a glass bowl. It moved and danced and spilled over the outter edges of some invisible prison. It protected Shawn from the worst of the explosion. The shades of shadow were roughly the size of the crator, which in itself was the size of a small car and deeper than the height of a man. "YOU CAAAAAAAN NOT DIEEEE!" He heard a hate filled slithery voice whisper in his head. "WE ARE NOT DONE WITH YOU SHINY HERO!" "DEATH CAN NOT BE YOUR ESCAPE. YOU'RE BOUND FOREVER TO OUR TERMINAL CAUSE. GET UP! GET THE FUCK UP! YOU WILL NOT DIE THIS DAY!"
The voices dripped into his mind like an echo reverberating off walls. Their voices were sickening. They made him literally nauseated but he pushed on. The whispy shadow faded as the black smoked formed the vipers. "COMMAND US! LET THE HATRED RUN THROUGH YOU!" The smoke outside the crator still obscured eveyron's view of what happened to the shiny hero. But rushing through the smoke was a black venom viper. It flew fast, stretching out and piercing Gavin's shoulder. It went clean through. "ARGGGUAHHH!" Gavin cried. Another shade flew out of the darkness of the hole. This one wrapped around Gavin's neck and squeezed. The shade that went through Gavin's shoulder. Swamr around him and constricted him like a boa constrictor.
Gavin's arms were pinned to his side. Shawn rose from the hole. The two remaining dark energy beasts, one headless and spilling white light; planted in the ground and pushed off rising his body above them. Shawn rose higher than a man should stand. He towered over Gavin. His eyes white fire and his hair brighter than the sun as it waved and furiously flowed through an unseen wind. "I'M DONE FUCKING AROUND!" Shawn roared. The anger was literally fueling him. Half of his face hung off the bone pathetically. The right side of his chest bathed in his own blood as it washed the scares of his burns.
His pants were burned as well Black sutt and burn holes tore at his jeans. His bare feet pointed downared as the shawodwy legs carried him higher into the sky. Shawn opened his mouth and white light spilled out. It shot out like a ray of pure innocence and that was something a man as corrupt as Gavin was not ready for. It burned. He bathed him in pure white fire. Literal goodness and cleansing purity. Gavin screamed. Then he did something Shawn did not expected. His wings burst forth with such power that it tore through his shadowy constriants. It hurt. It hurt like a motherfucker.
Shawn screamed and grabbed at his head. His dark energy lived in his mind and breaking their ties caused his head to throb. Gavin's wings spread wide and flapped so hard that he blew Shawn off balance. The wind was like a hurricane force. Shawn grew his two withered dark tenticles back and pinned them too in the ground just to hang on. "YOU DEFY AN OMEGA! I AM A GOD AMONG MEN! I AM THE SECOND FUCKING COMING OF JESUS CHRIST! I'M EVERY THING MANKIND IS AFRAID OF!" Gavin's eyes glowed a bright green and he ripped the scarf off his neck to reveal a tattoo of razor sharp teeth. Something happened.
His face elongated and stretched. His neck and lower jaw literally became rows of teeth! They broke and disclocated with sickening cracks and pops and Gavin's wings continued to whirl violently as this monster man laughed. His voice echoed with a deep pitch and this was a power not even Alyssa had seen. Gavin's hair was wild and frosty. Gavin's fingers dug into his ribs and instead of dripping his ink he ripped it from his flesh. To absurbly large chainsaws. He swung each arm and the chainsaws buzzed to live. Horrbile green eyes and razor sharpe teeth flying towards shawn with savage intent.
Shawn bared his teeth and got ready for the onslaught. He could feel the swimming vipers moving through his shoulder blades. They were hungry for flesh and carnage and they wanted to taste blood. Gavin was flying at him with a forceful speed. Shawn pushed his dark energy through the air with blind faith. Only it didn't strike Gavin. It struck the girl who foolishly tried to stand between the two comabatants. Ladiania. Ladainia sinclair. A shadowy viper, shades of malice and pure violence ripped through her chest. It burst out the other side with her heart in the viper's mouth. Ladainaia gasped and froze.
Her eyes wide with shock and horror. She turned to Lara in her final moments. She could not see her but she sensed her. A smile crossed rocky on her face and she collapsed to her knees. The viper did not stop. Shawn was horrified his mouth hung open... THough the viper devoured the heart with a savage hunger. It pulled out of her boy ripping a meaty hole in her chest. Gavin froze. His face bled back to normal. The monster teeth were gone. Tattoos no long on his face they bled into the dirt by his feet.
It was his normal face again. Somewhere unseen a Ghostly Ladainia stood beside Lara and smiled. She took her hand lightly "Don't be sad. I am free." Ladainia wanted to be the guardian angel sitting on Lara's shoulder. It was the least she could do to repay her for her father's cruelty. Shawn. tremblind from the weight of what he had done. Suddenl this mouth filled with white light only this time he was angry. He screamed and his cries echoed through the whole of the circus and Gavin was gone. Alyssa was gone. The circus was gone. There was nothing left except trails of singing smoke from where they used to stand and an empty parking lot. S
hawn dropped to his knees heaving, leaning over on his tired shoulders. His body was exhausted. He needed to go back to the dark lands. Just one more time. He needed that pure evil energy to heal his wounds. He looked at Lara with tired eyes and he knew he couldn't possibly ask her to go back. Not after everything today, but if he didn't he was going to die. HIs hair waved lightly in the soft wind. His face was horrible and battered and he was running on fumes. He reached a hand out to Lara. "I'm sorry."
