Broken this, sprained that, and all the stomach pains. It was annoying, but considering this is exactly where she wanted to be it was better than nothing. Jessica walked from door to door checking in all the E.R. patients. That was until she noticed a little girl sitting by herself. She looked around her for anyone resembling some of her features. Not seeing anyone she wandered to her side. The little girls arm was wrapped and she took a look at her charts. Broken arm, cracked ribs, bruises... parental abuse.
Jessica knew this all too well. Pulling the curtain she gave the little girl a smile. "Hey there. My name is Jessica." She started off soft as she moved closer. Taking a seat she placed a hand to her forehead. "Can you tell me your name?" She asked. "J-janine..."
"Well Janine, it's nice to meet you. Now, can you tell me what happened?" The little girl looked down as she started to cry. "I tried to help mommy...please don't tell daddy. Don't tell him." Her heart broke as she listened to her sobs. A faint light began to shower over the girl. Her pain began to ebb as the bones and blood vessels began to mend together.
"Don't you worry honey. Everything will be just fine." Pulling her hand away she was happy with her work. The little girl gave a shocked gasp as she moved around some. Her tears turned grateful as she sat up and hugged Jessica. "Thank you." The curtain moved away as a woman with a bruised face came in crying as well. When she noticed her daughter was doing much better she looked to Jessica with an appreciative smile. Jessica healed her as well and sent them on their way.
After what felt like forever and a day her shift was over and she was headed home. She was proud of the people she was able to help today. Hopefully that mother and daughter would be able to get out of town. Stay with family that loved them. Taking her usual way home she looked up to the sky. The stars shone, but not as brightly as she wished they could. The street wasn't as busy as it normally was in the rush hours of the afternoon.
However, doing that she hadn't noticed her footing veering and she shoulder bumped someone. "Watch where you're going! God, now look at this. This was an expensive suit!" The man raved at his ruined three-piece suit and Jessica just rolled her eyes. "Would you just shut up already? Apologizing isn't even worth my time now."
"The hell do you think you are!?" Shrugging her shoulders she smiled. "Someone who has class." She turned and walked away. 'Fucking assholes everyone...'
Jacob clutched the hoodie close to his shoulders and held the cap on his head low, there was a painful gash bleeding profusely beneath the close embrace of bandages along his side. Taking the job from a rich asshole he executed an assassination on the guy’s business partner. He spent weeks stalking the bastard but when he executed his daring plan he was ambushed by several G.A.D.E.M agents. He was well aware of his dangerous reputation but he never thought he’d be double crossed by a paying customer. Nevertheless, he knew his place could have been compromised so he opted for a cringy motel no one would care to look. It would have been better if he didn’t have to walk the entire way there.
The street was shockingly quiet but he appreciated the lack of witnesses as he held his arm tightly against his side in hopes of slowing down the bleeding long enough so he could patch himself up. Jacob took little notice of the argument between a beautiful red headed stranger and some suited up asshole thinking he owned the place. Jacob had to stop for a moment to catch his breath for a second as he eyes the long road. At least the bastards paid him ten grand up front just for a casual conversation, while they didn’t land him in cuffs they paid for a new fucking jacket. The mask he donned on the job was tucked inside the duffel loosely slung over his shoulder.
Jacob took a grunted breath and fell into another casual stroll on the sidewalk, the last thing he expected was bumping his bad side against the red head. It was ironic really, he just watched her encounter the same damn problem with the rich asshole getting into a cab.
“Sorry”, his voice was gruff and rude but at least he tried apologizing. Jacob grew slightly uncoordinated on his feet and he clutched onto her shoulder for a second before pushing forward in a hasty pace. The last thing he wanted was to draw unwanted attention to his less than legal dabble in assassinations.
“Fuck off buddy”, he muttered softly at the man begging for a donation for some useless organization. The sky was growing dark and rain wouldn’t take too long to follow, he needed to get somewhere he could fix himself and soon.
Jessica just couldn't get a break today. First that asshole, then some other guy trying to hide his face. But something seemed off. “S’okay…” She wasn't sure about him though. She heard the pained grunt and caught him as he fell into her. Searching for something she noticed the dark red stain on white gauze before he pushed off.
Jessica couldn't rightly let him walk away if he was injured. Catching up to him she felt she'd regret this but wanted to help. But she couldn't use her powers in front of everyone. She had to make sure that he was the only.one that saw it. Otherwise she'd have to move again. Gadem had been gaining traction in the larger cities because half their population or more were mutants.
“Hey, Cap.” She called to him softly. Once he looked at her she leaned a little closer. “You need to get someplace safe before you pass out from blood loss. My place isn't far from here.” It was just one more block. She could help him there and then afterwards he could go about his own business.
Jessica wanted to help, and it was obvious in her light brown eyes as they almost seemed to glow. She wouldn't take no for an answer. She'd just have to find a way to force him there if he continually refused.
Jacob turned around abruptly and grasped her wrist in a painful hold, he was paranoid and overall grumpy. When he realized she wasn’t the enemy in the guise of a G.A.D.E.M agent he let his hold falter somewhat. “It’s just a scratch”, he saw the almost surreal glow to her gaze but he didn’t trust anyone besides his own two hands. Besides, for all he knew she could be as much a threat to him as he was to her.
He shook of her concerned touch and staggered forward, he wasn’t aware of the amount of blood seeping through the bandages until he saw the world in front of him float in and out of focus. Jacob darted into the first alley he could find and shrugged his metal arm uncomfortably, it was heavy under the weight of his aching side.
Jacob couldn’t remember the last time he’d bled like this, it was probably three years back in the heart of Texas where he got into a heated brawl and ended up at the end of a hunting knife. It would’ve ended better if he wasn’t drunk and stumbling through the fight like a blind person.
The last thing he expected to see was the kind gaze of the same stranger he shrugged off in the middle of the alley watching him. “I said I’m fine”, he tried deflecting her gaze by darting deeper into the alley but he ended up hunched over a green dumpster gasping for breath.
“Fuck”, he grunted painfully trying to tie the bandages deeper around his abdomen worried that the stranger might end up calling the cops on him and he’d die wasting away in a prison cell.
Jessica should’ve just said fuck it. He obviously didn’t want her help, but that goody goody voice nagged at her. She didn’t cry out when he held her wrist too tight. She’d felt that kind of pressure before. All she did was take a deep breath and tried to calm her heavily beating heart. “Just a scratch my ass.” She scoffed.
She watched as he loosened his grip and made his way down the alley. She held her wrist for a moment and gave an annoyed groan. She was gonna have to follow him. She had to. She didn’t want someone dying when she could obviously help. But seeing as how he was keeping his distance maybe he’d get far enough into the alley that she could use her powers.
She followed him with her hands in her jacket pockets. “You’re not fine.” It was obvious to her own eyes. His hair was looking limp and wet from his sweat, his skin looked clammy, and not to mention how pale he looked. She reached out for him again, but he moved again. ‘Great. Mr. Squirrely… gotta get a way to touch him.
Jessica heard him curse as he leaned over the dumpster. “Okay, seriously hold the fuck still.” She looked back to the capped man and went to his side. He was going to worsen the blood loss with that tight of a grip. Without thinking she placed her hand on his and closed her eyes. A bright yellowish orange light came from their contact. The skin heated in a warm flickering fire type of way. She always imagined like in a fireplace during a cold winter storm.
Once the light and warmth went away she pulled back. “You’ll be fine now. It might take a day for your blood to get back to normal.” Her tone was cold and unfeeling, but her eyes showed concern. She wondered where he was headed to, but shook it from her mind. She didn’t have to know.
All she knows is a wound like that wasn’t self-inflicted. She just hoped she didn’t help the wrong kind of guy. Helping him to stand he was already starting to look better. ‘He’s got a handsome face… nuh-uh nope, don’t start going there.’ She thought. Jessica decided then was a good time to continue down the alley. A shortcut to her apartment.
“Take care of yourself Cap.” She gave a two fingered salute as she walked away. She wasn’t even thinking of the possible people that could have still been able to see her save his life. She didn’t know about the G.A.D.E.M. agents tracking him down. “Hope you get to wherever you’re going to.
Jacob glared up at the beautiful stranger with an air of disdain haunting him. he hated interaction with other people as much as he hated Gadem and there she was calling him out on a very blatant lie without even considering how much of a danger he could turn out to be. Jacob tried setting as much space between the two of them but it was becoming increasingly difficult with every second tearing away at the strength he had left.
As much annoyance he felt at her relentless pestering he found her confident command almost comical, a strained chuckle slipped through his lips as he finally grew still with one arm slung over the dumpster. Jacob was shocked at the warm light dancing off her touch and he felt as if he’d met the embrace of a fire in the midst of a terrifying winter. It was almost fearful how calming her touch was but even more importantly, he could feel his skin stitch together and the pain dissipate into pure nothingness.
“Leave”, he supposed thanking her would have been a little more appropriate but the will to blend back into the world without having to owe anyone anything was far more powerful.
Jacob’s eyes fell onto a suited stranger walking past the alley and he knew it had to be another agent. While the man hadn’t spotted him yet he wasn’t prepared to take any chances. For a moment he considered leaving her to her own fate, if GADEM discovered her unique talents it wouldn’t be a loss to him. But then again, looking down at the healed wound in his side he found a taste of humanity and watching the redhead walk deeper into the alley left him with a bitter taste.
Jacob walked at a fast pace before grasping her elbow in his palm and pulling her to a more complex route leading to the cringey motel around the corner. “Don’t scream, don’t run, just follow. You’re obviously not normal and right now that’s a dangerous species to be. We’re being hunted and the hunters – they’re out here. Wherever you’re going, it’s not safe”, he wasn’t sure if it was a good idea divulging his thoughts to her but he wasn’t certain it was a terrible idea either. Besides, he could always dump her when he was sure GADEM followed a useless lead somewhere else. for a moment he could at least repay the debt of saving his life by saving hers.
Jumping a bit Jessica turned her brown eyes towards the man. Taking a deep breath she listened carefully as she continued walking with him. Feeling the strength of his grip earlier she knew her basic self-defense wouldn't push him off. But she felt she needed to follow his lead. “Well then… that is a problem.” She kept her head still as her eyes darted around.
'Should've just left well enough alone.’ She thought. Looking into the man's face she didn't see deceit. Maybe a sliver of concern, but it was difficult to tell. "Here." Gently pulling her elbow away from him she placed his arm around her shoulders. "No one will suspect a couple strolling down the road." She said. She'd done this enough times to get away from others before. It always worked for her.
“I'm guessing you'd know about said hunters being so close and personal earlier.” She teased at the memory of his cut. She couldn't help the blush on her cheeks feeling the muscles of his arm and his side. Taking another deep breath she looked up at the twinkling of far-off stars. Her head leaned against his shoulder and she had to admit. It felt nice.
It had been a long time since she last dated someone. She figured she was destined to be alone because of her cursed powers. That all she would be was someone's object... never anything more. "So, gonna tell me how you had that happen in the first place? Or should we just leave that up to classified?" She joked. Although the look on her face was very serious her tone was light.
Jacob looked from her to the bland collection of bricks piled on the wall to his right, she was right about a couple being inconspicuous but he hated not having thought of it before her. He was a proud slave to pride but he tried hiding it most of the time, besides, there were more pressing matters to be concerned with. Jacob spared her a subtle nod and relaxing into the warm gesture, if he was as stiff as a corpse he’d be made from a mile away.
“We leave everything classified”, Jacob’s tone grew stern and slightly rude as he glanced at a suited man darting closer from a small, cramped space to their right. He was sure the agent hadn’t seen him spot the oncoming attack so he leaned closer into her embrace and whispered softly in her ear.
“Make a good show of it”, without warning he shifted his body weight so she’d shield him from the man with his gun raised and waiting to apprehend a fleeing assassin. Jacob made sure to use his metal arm in hopes of shielding the girl from any oncoming bullets, should his plan end up busted in the dim light of a sunset.
“I bet you thought I didn’t have a plan B”, Jacob smirked seeing the slight hesitation in the agent’s gaze before grasping a knife from his jacket with a free hand. to the untrained eye it might have looked like he stuffed his palm into his jacket in a lack of fear for the situation but in a split second he tossed the bladed weapon into the agent’s shield. The silenced pistol in hand released it’s hold over a flurry of bullets but Jacob already pulled the girl into his arms and crouched low where they’d be safe from the onslaught of gun fire.
“We need to move quicker. Come on”, Jacob didn’t hesitate to hold her underneath the warmth of his good arm before dodging in and out of alleyways in hopes to reach somewhere safe soon. A first he opted for a motel until he spotted an empty warehouse under construction just begging for new tenants, instead of visiting the low rated motel to his left he pulled her to the steel entrance doors of the warehouse.
“Watch my back princess”, hoping no one would stumble upon them he slammed his steely hand down on the lock. The door busted open and he pulled her inside with haste, at least he knew GADEM might dodge the opposite way in search of him and he’d have some time to catch his breath.
“We’ll be safe here, for a while at least”, Jacob ran a gruff hand through his messy hair and turned to glance at the redhead. He wondered if she’d try and kill him before the night ended for ripping her evening to shreds.
All Jessica had wanted was a normal night in. Read a book, listen to some music, maybe even binge watch a show she needed to catch up on. But no, tonight had other plans. Dangerous plans, and it was somehow thrilling to be part of it. Although she’d never really show it.
“Okay.” Was all she said as he dismissed her curiosity. However, the less she knew the less likely she was going to be seen as an accomplice to whatever it was he did. But she did give a squeal as she was turned towards a man with a gun. Her face flushed as he was so close to her ear with is breath.
She looked over the suit, his face, his gun. “Please mister don’t shoot!” She cried out in fear. If she had done drama she’d have been a great actress. She knew when to turn the water works on and off. The shake to her voice to make her seem more pathetic, a damsel in distress. It made men too easy to predict as he hesitated to shoot.
But that soon quickly changed. Everything moved so quickly as bullets went everywhere, and the man pulled her to safety. “Yeah, lead the way.” She said and followed his lead. She’d never really been that good being stealthy, but with him basically guiding her with those… strong arms… she shook her head. ‘Stop it! This is no freaking time for that!’ She scolded herself.
She wondered why they hadn’t just gone to the motel when he turned for the warehouse. But thinking about it… it would probably be their first thought too. Jessica scoffed at the nickname. “I more prefer Angel, but I guess princess will do.” She sassed back. She kept her eyes and ears open as he took care of the lock and pulled her in.
Letting out a deep breath she slid down the wall and curled up before just sitting there cross legged. “Oh, I was just gonna go and walk right on out to the slaughterhouse.” She rolled her eyes with the sarcasm. “You’re lucky. After this I think I need a few drinks… and probably some good sex.” She said bluntly. She wasn’t shy at all really when it came to the subject, but because she hadn’t been around many men in her life she didn’t really think of it much. She wondered if he’d be interested, but maybe that would be too forward.
“IF that’s the case you shouldn’t be preferring angel”, Jacob turned to glance at her before pushing his back against a wall and slowly easing himself down to sit. His side was healed but he still carried the fatigue of running around trying to keep from getting killed. he suspected she didn’t want to be taken by a government agency but he wondered if she would have followed him all the way here if she knew he was an assassin for hire.
He quite liked her blunt statement and he couldn’t deny that the prospect of a damn good drink and night of raging sex sounded like the perfect way to blow of steam. Jacob pulled the leather jacket from his shoulders and set it neatly by his side, he wondered if she’d be shocked or revolted by the metal arm at his side but either way, he didn’t give a shit. While he hated the sight of his stump he appreciated every fucking bonus of having a metal arm, especially against that damned agency.
Jacob was well aware that his contribution to the world wasn’t something to be proud of but he loved every thrilling second of it. “We need a change of clothes before we leave”, he looked up through the messy strands of hair defying his will and dangling in his eyes, albeit both brilliant orbs widened in realization of what he’d said. He didn’t want this stranger to come with, it was just a stupid mistake he spoke aloud.
Jacob pulled himself to his feet by the bricked wall to his back hoping to drive the words into a silence no one could recall. He pulled his mask from the back pocket of his pants and set it on his jacket before making his way over to Jessica. Normally he’d be a little more subtle about what he wanted, actually no, he was always a straight shooter and he took what he wanted when he wanted.
Jacob must have seemed towering as he marched to her with intent, his calloused hands grasped her shoulders roughly with an almost proud smirk. For a man made to kill the kiss he planted on her lips was gentle at first before his hands slid down the length of her beautiful figure. Jacob hoped she didn’t mind the cold touch of metal against her skin but then again, he didn’t really give a shit. All he wanted was a good excuse to let off some steam in a way that would benefit him and not land him in a ditch.
“I hope you don’t break easy”, he whispered the words softly in her ear before lifting her small figure into his hold. He hadn’t been with a woman in too long and he had to admit, the pure raw decisiveness she showed him was more than enough to send his mind into overdrive. Jacob roughly set her down on the cold steel of a table in the corner with one hand leaning against the wall by her back as he glanced down at her. He was an asshole and a dick but he never took something from a woman if it wasn’t two sided and he patiently waited to see her reaction
Jessica just smiled and shrugged nonchalantly at his quip of the name she’s been known to go by. The ones she had helped through dire conditions were the ones who really deemed her the Angel of Mercy. It was something she actually liked, but also hated at the same time. Angels of Mercy had always been people who killed others to stop their suffering, not healed them until they could leave on their own terms.
Her smile faded into a curious look as she watched Jacob remove his jacket. She felt a heat rise to her cheeks as she saw the cut muscles of his arm. But she was curious of his other arm. The metal one. She hadn’t ever seen anything like it before. There was no disgust in her eyes, just the wonder a child might have when seeing something on a shelf, or a cat with something shiny. She wanted to ask about it, but seeing as he didn’t want to talk about what happened before, he may not want to bring up the even further past.
Her eyebrow raised at his statement of needing new clothes. She looked down at her own and they were definitely dirty, worn looking. But scrubs hadn’t always been flattering either. Until it clicked in her mind. ‘Is he really going to be taking me with him?’ Fear bubbled behind her calm demeanor. She knew she’d be outmatched fighting wise.
Jessica watched his every step carefully. Her brown eyes looking up into his blue orbs. She hadn’t expected to have him pull her into a gentle kiss. For a split second she didn’t react. Her brain went blank, but she then relaxed into it as her body loosened against his hold. Her mind was screaming at her to not do it, to run when she had the chance, but her body wanted this. It had been too long since she felt the caress of a man.
Feeling the chill from Jacob’s metal arm sent a shiver of pleasure down her spine. She didn’t know someone could make her feel like this. She had felt more alive than ever, maybe it was still adrenaline in her system, or repressed lust over the years. Whatever it was she wanted to find out. Her arms wrapped around his neck as he lifted her to the table and she shivered again.
Her breathing was ragged as she felt him pull away. “Oh, you’ll find I can be quite flexible.” She smirked and stripped off her shirt. Her hands cupped his face before pulling Jacob into another more passionate kiss. One filled with repressed lust and yearning for another person. Her hands wandered over his strong shoulders, down his chisled chest. She was going to enjoy this.
“Good, I like flexible”, he whispered the words into the soft skin of her neck as his hands roughly and eagerly explored the extents of her beautiful skin. Jacob pressed his body against hers as he slowly eased himself out of the constrictive touch of his clothes. Every second tasting her lips and feeling her skin was pure, raw bliss he just couldn’t get enough of. Jacob was engulfed in the folds of lust and passion and he slowly gave himself over to those primitive desires, every second was worth his time. When the peak of intensity left him shaking on his own two legs he leaned forward against the warmth of her skin to catch his breath in rapid inhales.
“You’re definitely no angel, that’s for sure”, the sky was dark now and the only light streaming in was the faint moonlight glistening through the panes of glass on the windows lining the walls. There was a slight cold breeze in the air but the embrace of raw passion left him sweating in an intense heat that felt as if it couldn’t be calmed by any blizzard.
Jacob had half a mind to kiss her for a final moment but he pulled away instead, reached down and picked up her shirt before holding it out to her. He spared her gorgeous figure a final, appreciative glance before slipping back into the gruff fabric of his jeans. Those bastards had to have lost them by now and he was desperate for a good drink and something to eat.
“I was goddamn lucky to run into you”, he winked slyly at her for a second before peeking through the doors. When he was satisfied with the dull lack of paranoia in his gut he thought he’d give it a shot. After all, he was better than good now and capable of keeping himself out of their clutches.
“Hope you’re ready for that drink now?”, Jacob waited a second in curiosity but it wouldn’t really derail his plans if she opted to stay in for the night. Remembering his mask and jacket in the corner he quickly ducked back inside and grasped both items closely. He rolled his eyes at the mundane thought of keeping her warm before he held out his jacket for her, no doubt the wind was chilly against the skin of her arms.
All Jessica could feel was heat, all she could hear was the heavy breathing between two writhing bodies in the throes of ecstasy. His arm and the table added exciting licks of chills to her spine as she lost herself in the moment. She could barely feel her legs as the intense feelings came and ebbed away.
A smirk came to her pink lips. “Devil's used to be angels at some point right?” She joked, but to speed degree it was true. Jessica shivered at the cold breeze as it graced her hot sweaty skin. Good thing she didn't get sick.
A soft whimper left her as his warm body left hers to the cold air. She didn’t know why but she wanted him with her just a bit longer. Maybe the solitary life was starting to get to her. After all she was climbing in years and still hadn’t found the one. But she doubted she ever would. People were selfish creatures using others to their advantage.
Her eyes wandered over the tight muscles before he covered them up and she took her shirt back putting it on. She shivered again as she got to her feet, the misspoken words from earlier forgotten to her. Now she really wished she had a jacket. It wasn’t supposed to get this cold, but then again mother nature didn’t give a crap about what it was supposed to do.
Her cheeks heated again at his wink and she looked away, before a smirk placed itself on her lips. “I told you so.” She winked back to him and walked over to the door, waiting for any sign to get back. Jessica was surprised when he pulled away from the door so quickly. That is until he grabbed his things, and handed her his jacket.
Looking from him to the jacket and back she felt a bit of her guard crumble. Taking it she gave a gentle genuine smile and placed it over her shoulders. “Ready whenever you are.” She said and followed him out. “And maybe a round two?” She blushed more as she felt a heat rising within her. ‘Oh God… not now!’ She thought and pulled the jacket on top of her head to keep the glow from showing too far.
Once it died down her legs weren’t sore, the satisfying feeling she had began to ebb to nothing. She was going to die of embarrassment if he asked her just what happened.
Jacob stopped in his tracks almost too quickly to turn and glance at her, there was a hint of playfulness in his gaze that was otherwise absent from his life, “You want to start round 2 when you’re not even recovered from round 1. I didn’t give you enough credit but if you’re up for it, who am I to argue”, he was so close to her he could smell the touch of her shampoo and he couldn’t deny that it was probably one of the best things his senses had ever met. When he thought his body might betray his guarded thoughts he opened he opted to walk in the general direction he heard the faint lullaby of music from.
It didn’t take long until the smell of cigarettes and the sound of a rowdy crowd greeted him, and on top of the doors was a worn sign introducing him to the bar. ‘Harvey’s’, it reminded him of a contract he had six years ago to kill a cheating husband. If it wasn’t for the hefty sum of insurance money he’d have killed the wife too taking too long to pay the bill. Jacob walked through the heavy doors and turned to see if she’d follow. For all he knew she’d be smart and dart off the moment she got the chance.
To his surprise he watched her pass through, the big fellow hunching over the pool table glanced up at her slim figure but he backed down from a very firm, dangerous glare spared by Jacob. There was no reason to get all territorial but he didn’t have the energy to rationalize the idea. He ushered her to the only open stool at the bar, he left it open for her and elected to stand with one elbow balanced on the dirty bar top and the other barely holding onto the back of her seat.
“Bourbon, and whatever the lady wants”, the man behind the bar was late into his fifties with long, greasy hair but a kind smile. Jacob wasn’t met with the same pleasant glance at Jessica but he couldn’t blame the guy. Jacob looked like the kind of bastard begging for some dumb shit and he knew people didn’t take too kindly to his borderline rude approach to basically everything.
Jessica just shrugged. “Round 1 is always just practice.” She winked at him with a little giggle. Following his lead she stayed close just in case. Moving through the alley’s she couldn’t help but glance at this man. Should she offer to put him up for the night? Would he refuse? At least she knew she could get drunk tonight since she didn’t have to go back in until the day after tomorrow.
“Such a gentleman.” Jessica teased as she walked into Harvey’s. Sure maybe she should’ve done the smart thing and went her own way back to her apartment. But she wasn’t that rude of a person. She could be a snarky bitch sometimes, but she’d never shaft a person. It was an almost constant thing of not wanting to feel like she owes someone for doing something for her, and he helped keep her safe. That deserved a little more than one round of sex and a drink.
Her eyes drifted to the men around the room and she suddenly felt like she was on display as it didn’t seem to have too many women here. But she felt oddly safe with Jacob as he seemed to be a barrier between them and her. Or maybe it was just her imagination. Maybe he was just being nice by letting her come along with him, and she longed for some kind of human connection.
Taking the seat that Jacob had saved her she smiled. “Make that two bourbons.” That’s when someone caught her eye. Her body tensed as she averted her gaze anxiously. In the dark booth of the place sat a man around her age. She tried to keep from turning back to stare, but she was sure it was her stalker of an ex. Jessica was scared of the guy because he could never take no as an answer. She even had an order of protection against the guy and he still came around her.
Racking her fingers through her hair she could feel his eyes on her. Putting her arms through the arms of the jacket she leaned against Jacob some to maybe give him a hint. When their drinks arrived she almost downed it like a shot.
