The circus experience was the wildest thing I had ever been through in my life, and the second most grueling experience the first being convincing my mother I was telling the truth. Apparently the fact that I was a mutant had spread in the couple of days I spent under the big top and we were already experiencing the shade from it. The cold shoulder from 90 percent of the town, only our real friends or complete strangers treated us human. The strangers were because they didn't realize who we were and the real friends because ya know, they were real friends.
My mother let me skip the next week of school, it was 'encouraged' by the school itself to give us time to adjust, as well as to give the school time to adjust to us. So walking around town while everyone else my age was in school was one of the few benefits I got from this whole thing. Thankfully I didn't have any friends my age that weren't online, but i did have a few that were a good bit older than me. Today I decided to head to the Dinner where Patricia worked now. She was my old baby sitter and almost like family.
I walked in and most of the customers just glared at me, Pat though she smiled and I smiled back. "Hey Patty what you got on special today?,"
Patricia always gave me her family discount and then pilfered me a piece of pecan pie for desert. Man I loved Pie, thats why I always considered Pat my friend with benefit, what is a better benefit then free pie amirite?
'I don't do half assed work so you need to find your patience and sit on it. Besides I like to take in the air. Enjoy the day as I'm getting closer and closer to my death every day. Also the contents of the chest are life-changing, but that's just how I like to leave my mark.'
"I'm well aware which is why I need it now."
'Take the chest with you. It's only a few more days. The guards will not give you an issue about taking it, as I marked you down as family.'
***
She was trying to get the chest open when she heard his voice. She turned with that famous smile and went back to fiddling with the chest.
"Hamburger and it's my last day Cam so if you come here again, you're going to have to pay."
The details were too much to tell him but at least he knew the basics that his days of free dessert were over. She looked over and noticed everyone was ignoring him. She did not get that. She railed her foot back and kicked the chest. Why would Relic give her a chest she could not get into. She already missed Mexico. Relic and his lies, but hey the sun had been nice.
"Ouch,"
because she had to sell it.
"Shouldn't you be in school?"
notes : i know YOU know how to tag. setting my o.c.d. off
Last day!?! Going to have to pay?!?! First my worst nightmare is confirmed, I was indeed destined to inherit the burden of my father. I was indeed going to bare the cross of being a Mutant and dealing with the hatred that flows in society for my very being, all the while resisting the urge to use my powers to my own personal gain. AND NOW, NOW, my friend with benefits is leaving not just me, but the job that makes her oh so appealing!
"Shouldn't we talk this over patty? I mean you leaving this place is a big move, have you even thought how it affected me? I mean how many long distance relationships do you know that really work out? Especially when I don't have a car yet, it could get expensive paying for gas for my mother to drive me wherever it is you go? Are you willing to pay that?,"
I sighed as I tossed my hands up looking at the people, one of them gave me the stink eye as if i was making a scene and I just gave it right back. "Seriously your an adult now patty, and you got to start acting like one and realizing that your actions affect more than just you. I hate to do this but as the man in this relationship I believe I am going to have to vito this whole last day thing, now where is my pie,"
And that was how you handled that. NO fuss, and no Pie missed.
she said as she honestly took a minute to look at him. Children hurt her in a way that she knew she never wanted any. Ever because not only did you have to make space for them for nine months or some thing but the world was fucked and who would want a kid in that.
"They will hire someone else to shovel you pie. Let me put it like this..me staying here it's not going to help me find my.."
Fuck she hated being stupid about stuff at times. It was time to expand her vocabulary.
"Alright, it's time to turn the page. Time to write a new book, start with chapter one if that makes sense."
Because all this prologue shit was boring her to death.
"Basically I have enjoyed having you in my prologue but you are way to young to go into my chapter, so you..well you get your own."
She said as she handed him some pie.
"Vanilla ice cream with that? Why is everyone looking at you, well like you are some sort of criminal?"
Trouble? Yea i was in big trouble, my baby mama was leaving me without pie! I mulled it over in my head, thinking back and fourth she said I was too young, she must be in the dark about my coming of age story. That would also explain why she was confused about the odd looks the people in the dinner were giving me.
"Patty Babe!," I continued my protest "My heart and stomach is in trouble if you leave me here! These people hate me, they know the truth and your the only one I have. Other that mama of course, and my Online Crew we call ourselves Devils Sight but yea,"
I reorganized my thoughts with a deep breath, turned in my bar stool and looked at the dinner full of inbred hill billies. Standing up on the stool I shouted " I am CAM THE HAM, I am Hard as a Mother fucker! And I am a MUTANT, with the ability to melt your friggin brains if I want too!!,"
I really wasn't sure what all i did, but melting brains sounded cool "And this gorgeous pie server here..," I pointed to patty "Is the love of my life and will continue to serve me Pie as she bares my mutant children, Now please stop gawking at us!!,"
Honestly this was getting a little more than ridiculous.
"Hey,"
she said as she heard him say that he was a mutant.
"You are going to want to calm down. More so because you are young and the last thing anyone wants from you is you hyperventilating."
She did not need that happening at least not on her last shift and right now she could not think of anything worse. Love of your life? Hold on.
"No such thing as love kiddo, maybe more along the lines of lust of your life but even then considering the age difference I would say that is a bit of a stretch."
The people were gawking though she noticed as she slightly rolled her eyes.
"Well beofre you leave let me at least tell you about the circus I attended," even as he spoke the spark in his eye was shining. It had some scary parts but more important than that was the fact that he liked what he had seen. He figured it was simply because he was a kid and innocent.
"It was like nothing I had ever seen Patty and I do not think I will ever see again." Sure it was costing him a few dirty looks but he was more than willing to deal with that. "If you really leaving where you headed?"
He checked his breath once she was up. It seemed okay but she seemed freaked out so he spoke. "Okay call me" he said in a joking manner but he did mean it though after she was gone he realized he had not given her his phone number.
"A circus?"
Wow she did not think she had seen or even heard of anything like that in years. When you are a kid like Cam was however she thought that might be an amazing thing to see.
"How was it, as in did you enjoy it any?"
She did not want to assume that he did so she asked rather cautiously and waited for an answer.
He took a minute before speaking. Some parts of the circus adventure had been scary but mostly he thought they were interesting and it opened his eyes more than he thought it would. "I did have fun so I guess that is and will always be a good thing." Still now he was sad.
"Any idea where you might be headed?" He was starting to feel like he would not see her again and he was not sure if he liked that idea or not. "I did meet a man named Gavin Sinclair so that was fun."
